October TBR | Journal Flip-Through

We are halfway through the last full week of September and has been such a lovely one. The weather has felt like fall, Matthew has been on vacation, and we’re enjoying the fire pit in the evenings. We’re also expecting rain tonight and all day tomorrow and I’m delighted!

I’m sharing next month’s TBR today with the hopes that you’ll find one or two books that you want to read along with me. I’d love to discuss them with you. I’m also sharing a new YouTube video that I made this week, so please keep reading!

October TBR

I have quite a few books that I want to get to next month to help me work toward a few reading challenges. My monthly TBRs are always unrealistic expectations!

2024 Booker Prize

Stone Yard Devotional was the only book on the shortlist that I haven’t read yet and my Blackwell’s copy arrived earlier this week. This is the book on my October TBR that I’m most excited about.

I’m still enthusiastic about reading the entire list, so I’m also planning to read Playground in October. Richard Powers writes big, beautiful books and I expect this one to be no different (although Amazon tells me that this one is only 389 pages, so not that big!). After Playground, I’ll only need to read one more book (Headshot) to finish the entire long list and that is on my November TBR.

Female Prize Winners:

I’m still slowly reading female prize winners:

Specific Authors:

I am so close to finishing all of Toni Morrison and Louise Erdrich’s adult fiction. Two more to tick off my lists:

Translated Works:

One of my goals is to read more translated works and I’ve somehow ended up with three on my list this month:

New and New-ish Releases:

Some of these have been published in the last few months and some have been published over the last year, but they’ve been lingering on my TBR and I’m expecting a few of them to finally come up on my Libby holds:

Random Backlist Titles:

And finally, two random novels that I’ve been wanting to read for a while. [Actually, I just realized The Anomaly is also translated, but I don’t want to leave Virginia all alone by herself down here!]

2023 Journal Flip-Through

Friends, I’ve been having way too much fun making videos lately. I’m learning a little bit more every day and it’s been such a spark for my creativity. Thank you all for your patience as I try new things over on my YouTube channel!

This week I learned how to add music to my videos. So I filmed a flip through of my 2023 journal and added music to it. Ha!

One more thing before I close out this entry – it’s Banned Books Week. So check out the ALA’s list of Top 100 Most Frequently Banned Books and visit your local library or indie bookstore to grab one or two!

Okay, now I really am finished this morning. I am so excited about reading in October – I know I won’t be able to get to all of them next month but it’s so much fun to try. Are you planning to read any of these books next month? Do you want to do a buddy read for any of them? What’s on your own TBR? Are you working towards any reading goals? Let me know in the comments!

  1. An ambitious list! I have never read Penelope Lively, but she is on my tbr list as I am a huge fan of 20th century women writers, especially ones from the UK. Also interested in The Ministry of Time. Will see about requesting that and Moon Tiger through interlibrary loan.

  2. Wow… what a list, Katie! I have read just two of these… Erik Larson’s Demon of Unrest (I really enjoyed it!) and The Ministry of Time (I was not a fan) I want to read Powers new book as well! And I am adding Colored Television to my TBR list!

    1. Thank you for the encouragement about Larson’s book and it seems like The Ministry of Time has been quite polarizing. I’m anxious to see which side I land on! Happy reading in October!

  3. That’s a great (and ambitious) list! I’ve also got Playground up soon, as well as Stone Yard Devotional and Claire Messud’s book from the Booker longlist. I think Louise Erdrich’s new book comes out next month — I preordered it from her bookstore, so I’ll be getting a signed hardback!

    1. Yay for getting Louise Erdrich’s new book! I have that on my list for December because, if I stick to my plan, that is when I’ll finish up all of her adult fiction! And it seems fitting to read her most recent last. I can’t wait to read what you think about it!

  4. What a great list! Maybe you having Mrs. Dalloway on your list will inspire me to pull it out again. I tried to read it (and The Hours) earlier this year with not a whole lot of success, but I want to try them both again before I give up.

    1. Good luck with Mrs. Dalloway. I’ve also tried to read it several times with no luck. But I’m stubborn and think that it’s a book that I will LOVE if I can just persevere!

  5. I just started Ministry of Time, and so far I like it – it’s funny! It seems like a lighter read, so as long as I don’t expect too much from it I think I’ll come out on the side of a positive review. I also need to get to The Lacuna, I want to be a Barbara Kingsolver completist, and that is one I haven’t read yet. I just started a 1000 page Ken Follett though, so it definitely won’t be this month.

    1. Those Ken Folletts are quite the commitment – I hope you enjoy it! And I’m happy to hear that you’re enjoying Ministry of Time, I’m nervous to start it!

  6. What a lot of interesting reading ahead for you. I am contemplating rereading some of Morrison’s work. It’s been a long time for me and I know I would read it differently at this time in my life.

    1. I’m also considering rereading Morrison next year, despite being so close to finishing her fiction. Her work is so layered and rich and rereading is rewarding. I’m trying to come up with a plan for 2025!

  7. So many pages in your journal! and I love how you skip a few days/weeks, and then get right back to it! I’ve read most of what’s on your October list – except for translated ones, and Colored Television. I have CT ready to start this week!
