Friday | Just Keeping Myself Busy

This week has been a total kerfluffle of days but my notebooks have consistently noted that today is Friday. I’ve done my best to keep my mind occupied this week and have been reading, knitting, and trying to spin for the most part. It’s been really cold and I haven’t had the heart to go out for my walks on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but that changes today! Here’s a little update on how things are going for me:

My little sock experiment was a success! This is a pair of toe-up shorties knit with a total of 40 grams of fingering weight yarn. I don’t think I’d try a pair of socks for my own feet with any less than this amount; I was looking for the magic number of just enough to use up leftovers. For me — this is it!

And if you’re keeping track (and I don’t expect you to be), this is the third pair of socks that I’ve finished this year. Clearly knitting has been my coping response so far this year!

I am still practicing with my supported spindle everyday and am making almost no progress. I told Matthew a spinning wheel and an online class would be an excellent investment ahead of the approaching apocalypse but he disagreed. So I might try to buy a drop spindle instead and am overwhelmed by the choices. Does anyone have a favorite seller or type they could recommend?

I am still waiting for my copy of Onyx Storm to arrive at the bookstore so have decided to reread Iron Flame (the second in the series). This is proving to be a very good move because I’d forgotten a lot of the details and the side characters. So if you’re looking for me, check Basgiath War College.

This weekend will be for working, walking, reading, swatching for a new sweater, and maybe twisting up some fiber to make a little bit of yarn. I also want to prep lots of delicious veggies and soups for the coming week, so wish me luck in the kitchen.

Friends, I hope your Friday and your weekend are full of exactly what you need. Take good care.

  1. Great socks! This has been a week to stay in as it has and is still cold, even in FL. I have done very little this week and have decided I must now start scheduling time to read-to make it happen. Onward I go …

  2. I am quite impressed with those socks! As for the spinning, I know you said there’s no twist in the fiber on the spindle, but it might be easier to get it in the fiber now that there’s actually something attached to the spindle. I will again recommend TurtleMade spindles — very affordable and pretty indestructible if dropped.

We’re supposed to have temperatures near freezing this weekend, so I may join you in walks!

  3. Those socks are fantastic! (and my mind is entirely blown at three pairs of socks completed this year!) I am seconding Sarah’s suggestion of TurtleMade spindles. I don’t have one, but I know lots of spinners that do and they swear by them! (And it is much easier to attach a leader to a spindle that has a bit of a notch or indentation at the top of the shaft.) I wish like mad I was closer so I could help you get over the beginning spinning hurdle.

  4. Shortie socks … such a great idea and just look at what 40 g of yarn can do! Cheering on your spinning adventures – glad a few other readers have helpful advice to contribute. Hope you’re enjoying the weekend and got outside a bit. This is the maybe our final morning below freezing for a few days … Lucy has been wearing her one sweater non-stop and it really needs to be washed 😉
