Friday | Knitting, Notebooks, and Reading, oh my!

Happy Friday, friends! This week has flown by for me; how about you? I feel like I’ve just put my head down and powered through but have made a special effort to spend time in my notebooks, which always helps to slow things down just a little bit. Fridays are about reveling in the joyous parts of life here at The Cozy Burrow, so today I’m sharing a knitting update, a new notebook, and the books that have been pulling me along.

(sorry it’s so dark; the days are getting shorter!)

I spent some time with my Tessellated Vest last weekend. I thought it would start moving faster once I switched to the larger needles, but nope. Not so much?! I’m anxious to find more time to work on this project; I managed to knit just a bit on Monday (maybe 2 rounds?) but haven’t had an opportunity to pick up any sort of needle since then. Next week’s goal: more time with an audiobook (In Ascension) and needles in my hands after the kids go to bed.

My 2024 Hobonichi has arrived! This year I decided to buy the A5 Hon, which has a hardcover and can be used without a notebook cover. I don’t mind using my old Hobonichi cover (it’s yellow with white polka dots and quite cheerful) but I couldn’t pass up this beautiful botanical drawing by Tomitaro Makino.

I fell in love with the Hobonichi cousin several years ago, but am always hesitant to splurge on this notebook. I snagged my current one when it was on sale last spring and I’ve decided to never deny myself again! I use it every single day and it brings me so much joy. For me, it’s totally worth the money. 🤓

(The a6 Techo that I’m using for morning journaling also has an April start. I’m planning to buy a new one next Spring once I fill this one. I like being able to buy those separately so that the price tag isn’t so big all at once.)

((ALSO – I have been promising a look inside my notebooks for a long time. I can’t believe I used to share them every week because just thinking about that post is overwhelming! But I WILL share something soon.))

Clockwise from top left: 2024 Hon; 2020 Weeks (<- that links to the 2024 version); a6 pencil board; techo cover; a6 grid notebook

I laughed at myself when I realized that I had quite a Tomitaro Makino collection happening! The planner I chose in 2020 was a Makino design, as well as the grid notebook, pencil board, and techo cover that I bought last spring. Clearly I am consistent (predictable?) and love a good botanical print!

I shared this image last Friday but these two books are bringing me so much joy. I am dragging out The River We Remember for as long as possible because it’s just so good and wonderful. I don’t want it to end but I really want to know what happens. The ultimate reader’s dilemma! I love William Kent Krueger and he might be my new Wendell Berry.

I’ve started The Bee Sting and am only about 75 pages in. These characters are engaging and complicated and I’m enjoying it immensely! I am also tempted to see if I can find a way to stream Sylvia, because the girls have conversations about Sylvia Plath and her time at Cambridge. I’d love a cozy British setting tonight.

This weekend is up in the air for us. I’ll be working a few hours at the library tomorrow and then we might drive out to the coast to watch the waves forecasted for Hurricane Lee, as long as it’s relatively safe. I’m also looking forward to some time around the fire pit on Saturday night. Sunday will probably consist of cleaning and prepping for a new week of school. Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend? I hope your agenda is full of exactly what you need. Take good care.

  1. I needed your lovely post, since I have spent a mind numbing morning on admin, why is it so complicated. You have nearly convinced me to read the Bee Sting. Have a great weekend. I shall be crafting with two groups on Saturday and walking and visiting Open Studios on Sunday.

    1. Admin is such a necessary evil! I hope you don’t have to do anymore of that over the weekend! Enjoy your crafting time on Saturday and your Sunday visits!!

  2. What a lovely collection of notebooks you have! I’ve really gotten out of the habit of journaling but have been feeling the pull back to it lately, though I don’t have anything as lovely to write in (maybe if I did, I’d be more inclined to write more often?). This weekend is Rosh Hashanah, though I’ll be celebrating it on my own so as not to infect anyone else. It is supposed to be a beautiful fall weekend, so I’m hoping I can get out and enjoy a little sunshine.

    1. Maybe I’m awfully superficial, but a beautiful notebook makes all the difference. I get so excited to crack open my notebooks every morning and admire the beautiful pages and how I’m slowly filling them all up. Okay — maybe I’m not superficial, but super nerdy!

I hope you’re feeling even better today and manage to take a walk!

  3. I love this journal/calendar evolution, Katie. I have tried several times to do something new, but I always migrate back to my Traveler’s planner. It is my most efficient calendar, my most inviting journal, and I also have a blank grid book that I can keep track of things in…. all contained in my leather cover. It is my foundation for the day. (I am going to figure out how to incorporate my word journal in there next year!)

  4. Oooh a new Wendell Berry, looks like my TBR list just got longer! I get confused by the A5 and A6 sizing, nice to see the scale together. I want to order my 2024 Techno soon. Does the grid notebook fit in the cover with the planner? I have a full but good weekend ahead. The kids have today off, I have some work to wrap up, then Christmas trees to prune!

    1. I’m glad that picture was helpful! The grid notebook CAN fit the a6 cover, but the cover is designed for the techo planner so it’s a little bigger on the grid notebook. Hope that makes sense!

I think you’ll love William Kent Kreuger, especially his newest one 🙂 Enjoy your fall weekend and pruning!!

  5. I absolutely LOVE that botanical cover for the Hobonichi cover!
I participated in a fall book preview last night and Krueger’s book The River We Remember was mentioned. I don’t like reading crime/police procedurals and this one was described as having that element. Can you tell me a little more about it? Is it detailed on the crime procedural aspect? Or is it more akin to, say, Louise Penny or Agatha Christie?

    1. The River We Remember features a small town sheriff who investigates a murder but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a police procedural. I didn’t find it to be super detailed on the crime but instead focused on the relationships the victim had in the community. Definitely more Louise Penny than, say, Susie Steiner. Hope this helps!

      1. That does help! Thank you! I’ve really enjoyed the first two Penny novels so if Krueger’s book is along those lines then I would probably be okay with reading it. 🙂

  6. Ooh, I also love your botanical notebooks! I’m a notebook person too and I FINALLY found the perfect planner (for me). It’s just taken years to nail down what I want 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you’re getting this glorious cool weather too!

    1. I’d love to hear more about your perfect planner! Thanks for all of your kind words. It is 57* right now, which is so much nicer than the muggy high-60s/low-70s that we’ve been waking up to lately. 🙂

  7. oh my goodness – your notebooks!! I get overwhelmed, too, when I think about some of the posts I used to regularly share 😉 and how cool is that pencil board! I had to look that up, because it’s a brand new thing for me … and of course the Japanese/paper people have figured out a beautiful solution to every pen & paper journaler’s problem.
