On Never Reaching the Trouble-Free Phase

Happy Friday, friends! The wind is blowing hard outside right now as we prepare for another round of storms this weekend. But the sky is bright blue and we’re about to head out for a trip to Sam’s Club despite the wind and I wanted to check in before I sign off for the weekend.

The title for this post came from a book I’m slowly reading, Meditations for Mortals. This chapter reminds the reader that there will always be some sort of problem to overcome, no matter our financial or life situations. Case in point: Matthew got in a car accident on Wednesday and his car is totaled.

Please don’t get too worried – he is fine and thank goodness our children weren’t in the car. He was waiting to turn left into the gas station when a dump trump didn’t even slow down before it slammed into the back of his car. So we’re down to one vehicle while we figure things out financially and we’re trying not to stress out too much. We’re relieved that there’s absolutely no grey area for who’s at fault in this particular situation.

And still – it’s always something, right? We’re working on embracing this realization in real time right now.

In the meantime, I’m still knitting. I finished this sock this morning and am planning to cast on the second sock this afternoon. I’m also reading, more about that next week.

Once again, I’m so thankful to be a reader and a knitter. It’s getting me through all of the troubles present in my personal life as well as in the news. I hope your weekend is full of things that fill your bucket. Take good care.

  1. Oh Katie – I am so sorry and yes, there is always something. I am happy that Matthew is okay but know that this will require some very creative energy. I am feeling so grateful for a return to fabric play lately. It brings me so much joy. And sock knitting is another meditative process. Take care.

  2. Hard to ‘like’ this but I’m glad that Matthew is okay and I also appreciate the insight you shared — a hard one to accept sometimes. Fingers crossed that with no grey area the insurance companies work things out quickly and you are able to have a rental ASAP so you guys can do the many things you need to. And absolutely…knitting and reading, reading and knitting. (Oh, and breathing…) Thinking of you!

  3. So true, so true. Very, very glad to read that your husband is safe and sound. Hoo-boy! And that your kids weren’t in the car. Hope you get a nice settlement that allows you to get a good replacement vehicle without much cost to you. Keep us posted.

  4. Oh gosh, it is always something, and I’m so sorry to hear about the car! But I’m very thankful Matthew was unharmed — cars can be replaced, but people can’t. Given the other driver was very much at fault, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that insurance will make it right.

Enjoy the snowstorm and stay cozy!

  5. yikes! I’m so glad Matthew is ok – and trust y’all will figure out the right solution to the one-car problem. and I’m sure that wasn’t the “lesson” that Burkeman had in mind for that chapter. he would, however, completely agree that spending some time with books and knitting is a most appropriate response. Have the best weekend available!

  6. I agree that there is ” always something”. Glad husband wasn’t injured in the car wreck. Life happens doesn’t it and we never know what a day might bring. So happy we have support during those times. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  8. It is always something. I’m sorry about the car accident but glad that everyone is ok. We are having a cold weekend and imagine you are too. Yes, thank goodness for knitting, stitching, reading to help us through these rough patches. Your sock is pretty. They are flying off your needles.

  9. I’m so thankful that your husband wasn’t injured! But working with just one vehicle is stressful, so I hope you can work it out quickly. Burkeman is the best! I always feel better about life and myself when I read or listen to him. He is a voice of sanity and compassion.
