It’s Monday! | Spinning Progress & New Yarn

Good morning! How are we all doing? I can’t believe it’s already Monday – the weekend flew by way too quickly, right? I spent my spare time this weekend working at the library, resuming my walks, practicing with my supported spindle, reading a ton, and doing my best to avoid the news. I’ll be watching last night’s PBS Newshour in a couple of hours and am not looking forward to it. Luckily their Sunday night news is usually just a half an hour (I think?) so it won’t be too overwhelming.

I have just a couple of pictures to wrap up this weekend, including some exciting progress with my supported spindle and new yarn that came on Friday. So let’s catch up!

After I published my post on Friday, I watched (or rewatched?) Andrea Mowry’s latest spinning reel and something just clicked for me. I realized I was holding my fiber to the side of the spindle so when I flicked it, the fiber just wrapped around the shaft without putting any twist in. The very first time I tried holding it slightly above the shaft, boom. Twist. Insert all the excited emojis here. It took over a week of fruitless flicking to figure it out and I’m so excited that I have. Now – to keep practicing for consistency.

Thank you all for the drop spindle suggestions – I ordered one from TurtleMade. Having drop spindles on hand will teach me a lot about the process, so I’m excited to have options soon!

This yarn arrived on Friday! I meant to start swatching for a Moon Mint over the weekend but decided to spend every spare moment on my Iron Flame reread. I finished it last night and have an intriguing audiobook queued up (Eleanore of Avignon) so maybe I’ll get the swatch started today. Bronwyn and I got all these skeins on my umbrella swift and caked up on Friday afternoon so they are ready when I am. I’ve never knit with this yarn before and am excited to try it out. Have you used Sonder Yarn Co before? I love these greens together!

And now I have to run! The battery on my laptop is nearly dead and Colton is ready to come downstairs. I hope your week gets off to a good start – take good care!

  1. I am so excited that you finally figured out what was going wrong with the spinning! Hooray! I think you’ll find that a drop spindle is a lot less difficult.

I’ve never used the yarn you got for your new sweater, but it’s beautiful and looks like a really interesting fiber blend!

  3. I love the green! The weekend did fly by. I cannot believe how fast the weeks go and am retired and still feel I get so little done. But maybe that is what is important. Have a good Monday!

  4. Hooray. I am also excited you figured out another part of the spinning process. For me, I tried and tried and then one day, the process just clicked into place. As for consistency in the yarn, a teacher advised me that in the beginning to just spin and not worry too much about consistency. It will come with practice. And part of the beauty of handspun yarn is that it isn’t as even as commercial yarn. I was amazed at how the uneven consistency was absorbed by the fabric in projects.

I have not knit with that yarn but I love yarn spun from BFL. The colors are beautiful. Enjoy.
