Less | October 2023

Hello out there! This is my first blog post since October 9th, which is the longest I’ve gone without an update since 2016. Yikes! It seems like I took my word of the year to heart in October and coped with the outrageous month by narrowing my focus so tightly that it didn’t include my blog.

But friends, I have missed my time here. And I haven’t skipped a One Little Word update in many years and wasn’t about to do that now. Forgive this post in advance – I already feel out of practice and awkward in this space but need to break the ice with something!

Today I’m going to share how I did on my 31 Day Decluttering Challenge and about how focusing on Less helped me in October. This won’t be a long post but I’ll hope you’ll pop in for a visit!

I gave myself a 31 Day Challenge at our last One Little Word Check-in: to declutter 31 (very small!) locations in my home throughout October. I finished the month with 22 checkmarks on my list — 9 shy of my goal.

I’m not too upset with myself because there were two weeks when almost all of us were pretty sick and Matthew was recovering from having two wisdom teeth taken out. I’m calling it a win, especially since I tackled one of the most cluttered closets in my home!

Time will tell if my effort made decluttering a habit; I’m trying to figure out how to work little reminders into my life!

I don’t have to recount all of the ways in which October was a nightmare for most of us. What.A.Month around the world and here, close to home. It was necessary for me to pull back and focus on a small sliver of life if I was going to make it through the month with any sort of emotional well-being intact.

Not blogging for most of October is a clear indication that I focused on Less in October. While I have continued to read and stitch, it’s not at the pace that has been typical for me in the past. Instead, I chose one thing that would receive my full effort: our homeschool. And friends – it has felt so good to finally, in our fourth year of homeschooling, feel like I have a grasp on our day and to see my plans through fully. I credit that, completely, to putting some of my other interests to the side and focusing on this one thing.

My blog content has always been reading, stitching, and a tiny bit of personal stuff. It’s difficult to be vulnerable on the internet but I think it’s time for a change if I’m going to continue to show up in this space in a consistent way. Fewer blog posts are in my future, but I’m hoping they will be more impactful and personal.

2024 will be here in a flash and I’m hoping it’s my most reflective and encouraging year yet.

Thank you, Carolyn, for hosting the one little worders again this month. Here’s to an excellent November.

Take good care.

  1. You have been in my thoughts… and I am so glad to read this update! I think your biggest win for the month was how you connected MORE with homeschooling. Less has been a very good word for you this year… in very unexpected ways. I agree with you, sometimes the things need to be less so that I can focus on that thing that is needing more. It sounds like you found a good balance this month! (and YAY for your decluttering wins!)

    1. Thank you, Kat! I agree – LESS has been so good for me! It’s been so nice to feel completely put together in one area of my life lately. I’d forgotten that this feeling was possible!

  2. Glad to see you back! I’ve been thinking of the path forward with my own blog as well, and what I want to do with it, so know that you can do WHATEVER you want with yours! It’s difficult to keep up with when we have so many other responsibilities. Doesn’t it feel great to have decluttered? I tend to put big projects off forever, but once they are done it’s like a weight has lifted. Hope you are getting some good reads in!

    1. Thank you, Sarah! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for your blog. And YES – it feels great to have taken care of a few areas around the house. Now to address all of this overbuying that I tend to do!

  3. It was wonderful to see your post Katie. Decluttering is always a wonderful thing to do and while I’m not decluttering my home at the moment, I am decluttering my mind and letting I go of things that take me away from every day life.

  5. 22 spots is AMAZING. Kudos.

I’m sorry October was challenging and I hope that November is less so! I welcome seeing a post from you no matter how often or infrequent that is. My own blogging has been hit or miss lately too. Life gets busy.

    Take care, Katie!

  6. Glad to see you back … and cheering on your successes with decluttering and homeschooling (those seem like HUGE wins!) I’ve scaled back my blogging for a bunch of reasons, and wish you good luck in figuring out a way forward that feels right for you! (p.s. Marilynne Robinson has a new book coming out next spring https://www.amazon.com/Reading-Genesis-Marilynne-Robinson/dp/0374299404 – should we try to read The Givenness of Things before then?)

    1. Thank you, Mary! I’m totally on board to try The Givenness of Things as long as you’re okay with a very slow reading partner. I can’t seem to move very quickly on anything! When will it fit into your reading plans? I don’t have one right now!

  7. It sounds as if you found the right balance for you and your family. I would also say Congratulations on decluttering. Well done. You are very thoughtful about your priorities and homeschooling has to be one. We all have to find our way the best we can.
