Full of Joy Friday | Week 15 in 2021

Dear friends, I have missed two Full of Joy Friday posts in a row! I actually can’t believe it’s already Friday – this week has flown by way too quickly. The entire month has, in fact. And it’s just a reminder that these joyful moments are fleeting – if I don’t take the time to notice and commemorate them in some way, then poof! — they could pass me right by.

+ Somehow I mismanaged my coffee supply and allowed myself to run out last week. I went a few days drinking the bits and bobs from leftover bags until Matthew made it to Sam’s Club and got my nice, solid Member’s Mark canister. Oh, I was so happy to have those first, steamy sips of plain, black coffee again!

+ Amazon Prime has nearly all of Audrey Hepburn’s movies listed as free for Prime Members now. I’ve been falling asleep to Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany’s most nights and it’s been wonderful! I used to own all of her movies on DVD but we’ve long since donated our movies and DVD players, so it was so nice to revisit some of those favorites.

+ I got my first dose of Pfizer on Wednesday. The National Guard has taken over a local (nearly abandoned) mall and created a well-oiled machine. I was in/out in no time, with my second dose scheduled for me in May.

+ We’ve got a few plants into the ground that can withstand the frost: onions and lettuces. And it’s a good thing that’s all we’ve planted outside because we’re expecting 3 inches of snow today.

+ We’re making a bit of progress on our little home improvement project. Matthew finished the dining room floor yesterday and we’ve started moving things back in. We can do school in there today instead of on tray tables in the living room! We still need to seal the edges, put up the trim, and do something fancy with our IKEA bookshelves, but at least we can use the room again. I thought we’d be finished with ALL of our rooms by now and we haven’t even entirely finished one yet… so we’re running a bit behind my imaginary schedule. And yet – progress! I’ll take it.

+ Despite today’s snow, things are starting to turn green again. And that means that it’s time to return to The Shire! I borrowed The Hobbit from the library yesterday and am hoping the kids will be into it for our next read aloud. If not, I’ll read it myself because I can never get enough of those hobbits!

I hope to be back on Sunday with a poem in honor of National Poetry Month. Until then — I hope you all have a weekend filled with exactly what you need. See you soon!

  1. Good morning! Your post reminded me of one of my busy springs…my 4 girls were young and I was working full time and I felt like I lived on a constant treadmill that never stopped until one day I noticed the leaves were on the trees! I had missed seeing the buds and the beginnings of spring. Since then I do my best to take in the moments of life and enjoy the little things that when put together truly bring joy.

    1. I totally agree – it’s the little things!! I can’t imagine raising 4 children on my own and how busy/challenging that was for you. I love that you’ve built a life that you love!

    1. So far, so good! The chapters are a little longer than my 7 year old is used to so we have to take breaks throughout, but we’re working on it!! I love hearing that The Hobbit is loved in so many homes 🙂

  2. Glad to hear the house projects are going well. Also, turning IKEA bookshelves into built-ins? Brilliant!

Congrats on your first shot! I’m getting my second tomorrow, and I’m a little nervous about side effects, but I’ll take whatever comes — certainly it’s better than COVID!

Thank you for letting us know about the Audrey Hepburn movies. She’s one of my all-time favorites, so now I have a place to watch them and introduce them to my daughter.

  3. Delighted you had your vaccination. I reckon you will have your second dose ahead of me! Still anything is better than nothing. Good to hear of the house project going well. Have a nice weekend.

  4. SNOW! We had a couple flurries here in Wash DC this season. Hooray that your nearing the end of your tiny remodel… I experience delays, etc, just trying to mop the kitchen floor. Seems that mops today are worthless…so I’m off to see if I can find another “kind” to try. Enjoy the Hobbit; always a classic!
    Cheers~

    1. Your comment made me laugh out loud – thank you!!! We’re about 1/3 of the way through all of the rooms we want to re-floor and paint… yikes!! I’m happy to have The Hobbit for an escape 🙂

  5. Congratulations on progress on so many fronts – especially the vaccine, the floors, and The Hobbit (you might not believe this, but I’ve never that or any of the LOTR books …. also haven’t seen any of the movies!) … also, it’s lovely to see those pops of green!

    1. Oh my goodness — I definitely recommend both reading and watching The Hobbit. I didn’t enjoy the LOTR books or movies nearly as much as The Hobbit! I bet it’s amazing on audio. And thank you for the congrats on our progress!
