A Cozy Friday?

Happy Friday! I’m in the basement trying to write this before the kids wake up. Through the monitor (or “mom-itor” as Bryce used to call it), I can hear coughing and the beginnings of stirrings so I’m going to be quick!

We had a snowstorm hit mid-morning yesterday that lasted through the afternoon, so Colton’s school district closed because there was no way to know if the buses would be able to get down some of the backroads at the end of the day. The snow day was a relief because I’m still feeling poorly and it gave me a good excuse to cancel our homeschooling day, too.

I’m trying to be patient with this illness but I’m so frustrated. The problem is that coughing lingers for months for me after I get sick and the coughing affects nearly everything in my life. Exercise becomes very difficult, I’m hesitant to leave the house for fear of a coughing fit (which happened yesterday at the grocery store and I had to abandon my cart right in the middle of the store), and I end up vomiting nearly every day. It’s just terrible. I try to eat as healthy as I can, take vitamins, move my body as often as I can, and still… this happens every year. A winter cough takes over my life and won’t let go. And I’m frustrated!

Alas – here we are. Instead of focusing on what I can’t do right now, let’s talk a little about what I am doing: I’m doing my best to rest, reading some good books, and squeezing in knitting time. Here’s the progress on my Moon Mint sweater:

I’m almost halfway through the second repeat on the body! Like I said earlier this week, the pattern looks complicated but it makes total sense once you’ve done it a few times and it’s easy to memorize.

Today I’m planning to start We Do Not Part, the newest from Han Kang. I’m very excited to settle in with this one and will hopefully be able to tell you more about it next week. And I’m delighted to share that I’m ahead of my daily reading goal by over 1,000 pages:

This is the only statistic that I’ve feeling following closely on Storygraph and am relieved to be starting the year so strongly.

So I’m hoping to have a cozy morning of school today and then find ways to curl up with the kids this afternoon. Tomorrow I will probably still go into the library wearing a mask but I’m hoping the rest of the weekend will be as relaxed as possible. The Super Bowl is this weekend and Matthew has decided, “with great difficulty,” to root for the Eagles this year. I’m already looking forward to the nachos that we’ll be making!

Whatever the weekend brings, I hope you find time for the things that are important to you. Take good care.

  1. That coughing sounds brutal. I had something similar from the day after Christmas til almost the end of January and am just now starting to feel back to myself. I think the worst is the sleep disturbance – makes it hard to heal. Wishing you a cozy weekend and returning health and energy! (And I love your sweater — those colors continue to inspire hope — much needed these dark days! And the Eagles are a green team…so there’s that!)

  2. I know about the coughing and this week thought I was getting sick but it must have been allergies. I am so sorry you are struggling with this coughing, however you are doing all you can do to get better. The resting, the reading, and wow that beautiful green yarn!!! I believe having something to look forward to – like those nachos is always wonderful for the soul! Hang in there!

  3. I am so sorry about that lingering cough, Katie! Coughing is just the most miserable thing… and for it to linger just makes it even more so! Your sweater is coming along nicely! Here is to a great weekend, yummy nachos, (and even though I don’t they they will win… Fly, Eagles, Fly!)

  4. I am so sorry that the cough is so rough! Have you talked to your doctor about possible medication? I know there’s something prescription strength that I was given years ago for bronchitis. It’s certainly worth asking, particularly if you’re coughing so hard it’s making you throw up.

I’m sending you all the healing thoughts I can and hope it’s a weekend with lots of rest and hot tea!

  5. I sympathize with the coughing. I must have had the same thing as I spent January in a coughing haze. And I’m still coughing from time to time. I have described it as worse than a cold, not quite bronchitis. Glad you have day of rest. As a senior who sets her own schedule, I could rest whenever I wanted. But I surely remember the days when I couldn’t…

  6. oh Katie – that cough sounds awful – sending all the easy breathing vibes! ALSO the start of your Moon Mint … it looks great! I think my (kintting) stitch count and my page count are down a bit and maybe that’s just my new normal? or maybe it’s just my new mood?!

  7. Oh man, Katie that cough sounds miserable. I hope you feel better after a weekend of a little rest. Your new sweater looks beautiful. I have never knit a sweater in one piece from the bottom up so I’m anxious to hear about your experience. Take care.

  8. That IS a strong start to your reading year! And the sweater is gorgeous already. So very sorry to hear about the lingering illness/cough. The cough vomiting is horrible and I hope you find relief soon.

  9. I had a cough that would not leave in the late fall…a pharmacist recommended a teaspoon on honey…and it worked a charm. I almost went through a whole container of honey but I was really impressed with how it worked. Just a thought in case it would work for you too!
