Hello Monday

Good morning, friends! We’ve nearly made it through the first week of 2025. Over here, it’s been cold and cozy. I’m in the basement this morning with my morning journaling and yoga completed and hoping for enough time to give you a quick update on things around here. So let’s jump in!

My opening picture is from my walk yesterday. The sunset was at 4:26pm and I decided to squeeze in my walk at 4:10! So I hopped up and drove to the Veterans Cemetery (just 0.5 miles away) to work in 2 miles. It was dark and very cold by the time I finished, but it felt good to have it done. I used to walk at the Veterans Cemetery all of the time but haven’t for a while; it was a good reminder that it’s there in a pinch, especially when the snowmobiles take over my current favorite trail. And next time I walk so close to sunset, I’ll be sure to put my headlamp in my coat pocket before leaving.

These socks are off the needles! They are Snallygaster Fibers, the colorway is called The Crows Have Eyes. This is yarn that I got at this year’s NH Sheep & Wool Festival and I love it! It’s hard to see in this picture, but there’s a ton of dark blues and purples — very witchy. The pattern is the I’m So Basic sock pattern (Ravelry link). I think I’ll be wearing them today because our high temperature is forecasted to be 23ºF. I’ll take all of the extra warmth!

I’m planning to open my “sock club” package tonight and get started on my next pair of socks. I’ve already forgotten what I packed up for January so it will be a fun surprise.

And we are back to school today! I’m thankful that we’ve been at this for four years now because it should be easy to fall back into the routine that we’ve been following for a while. And still — there’s always a bit of nervousness about doing enough and doing it well. I’m looking forward to breaking the ice and getting back into the swing of things to help quell those feelings.

It hasn’t escaped me that I haven’t done a December reading review nor have I shared my year end reading thoughts! Both of those posts are on the horizon – far horizon. They are coming. I have a lot to say about both topics and have struggled to find a stretch of time to work on those posts. There’s a plan in the works to get it done!

How was your weekend? How is the new year treating you? I hope you’re staying warm despite all of the cold weather that North America is experiencing right now. And I hope that you’re able to engage in all of the cozy hobbies that bring you joy. Take good care!

  1. Love the socks — totally my colors! I hope they keep your feet warm today. I’m back in hand-knit socks and loving it. I hope all goes well with the first day back at school, and take your time with those reading wrap-up posts. They deserve however long they take!

    1. My feet are so warm! They definitely helped on my walk today 🙂

School went fine. My patience wasn’t very high so I’ll work on that tomorrow! But the first day back is over and that feels good!

  2. Beautiful socks!!!
I spent yesterday putting Christmas away for another year. I have special things collected over many years that I display for Christmas and enjoy having them out and especially love the added light from our tree during the dark days leading up to and following winter solstice. It makes me feel a little sad to tuck them all away however…
We are seeing more daylight and blue sky and sunshine which eluded us over the break. It’s been bitterly cold and after a big rainy day our yard and drive resemble a skating rink so your outside walk sounds wonderful!!
Today I return to my studio to get back to work 😊thankful that my commute is down my stairs! Have a wonderful day!!!! 💝

    1. Thank you! It’s hard to put all of the Christmas stuff away for so many reasons. But you’re right – longer days are coming! And that makes a big difference. I hope you got to see some sunshine today!

  3. Bravo to you for that pair of socks! They are perfect! I am very happy to be having a “minute of winter” here… we need it! I am eager to see your year end review and your reading review!

  4. Love the socks! So glad you got your walk in yesterday. I have not returned to my daily walk yet due to my sprained ankle and I am missing that special time. I will put up Christmas decorations tomorrow which always makes me sad as I love the beauty and the symbols.

    1. Take your time healing, Linda! It can be such a long process but you will get through it! I hope putting away your Christmas things goes well and that it’s not too hard on you.

  5. Good luck starting your new school year! A 4:30 sunset, I thought our 5:30 was bad! (5:37 today.) I am enjoying it being appropriately cold for January but I am happy to see the daylight last a bit longer each day!

    1. Thank you, Laila! I can’t believe we’ve already hid the mid-week point. The days ARE getting longer! I’m still, for the most part, enjoying these shorter days. But I’m sure I’ll be getting stir crazy for longer ones soon!

  6. FOUR years of homeschooling – wow! yay you … it’s so cool that you’ve found a rhythm and enjoy it. Those socks remind me of Weyward (which I read last month; it’s the January MMD bookclub selection) – hope they kept your feet warm today!

  7. Did those socks fly off your needles? I do love the colors in that yarn. Congratulations on four years of homeschooling. I’m sure it’s rewarding but I imagine that are all kinds of challenging moments. I’m easing my way into the new year and it’s been so good for me. I set up my planner yesterday and honestly, the world didn’t end because I didn’t get it done on or before January 1. It’s never too old to learn something new.

    1. They seemed to totally fly off my needles! I am happy to hear that you were able to ease into the new year — and a new planner setup always feels like a fresh start, no matter what time of year it is!
