The Monday Before Christmas

Hello! Just a quick drop-in to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah. I have spent the morning roasting vegetables for a Christmas salad, baking candy cane cookies that have become a tradition since Mary shared her recipe with me, planning when I’m going to get an opportunity to clean the house, and scurrying about in general, trying to get ready for Wednesday. I am a grinch during the holidays but I do my best to not let it show. Here’s hoping I can keep it hidden for another year!

Luckily, I have a few knitterly things to share with you today:

I have another pair of socks on the needles, as you can see in the opening picture up top. I took that picture last week and have since knit 6 inches on the leg, the heel flap, turned the heel, finished the gusset, and have about 4 inches done on the foot. I wish I had more time to knit right now but that’s just not going to happen thanks to the holidays. Maybe the days between Christmas and the new year?

Juliann posted recently about making her own sock club with her stash and I loved that idea. So I found 12 skeins of sock yarn and packed them into individual shipping envelopes. I chose a mix of some really deep stash dives and some ends that could be used up for shorties — I always have a ton of yarn left over when I knit a pair of socks! So I’m looking forward to unwrapping these each month and using up some of my stash next year. And maybe if that’s a success I can consider paying for a sock club membership.

I have knitting projects that were finished in November that I haven’t shared here yet. One day! I’m sticking to simple socks until after the holidays because I don’t think my brain can handle anything else. I’m also trying to read when I get the chance, but everything is moving along so very slowly. That’s to be expected, of course. All three kids are on a school break right now and it’s a relief to not have to worry about school stuff but it’s also difficult to keep them busy. So that’s why this post is rather choppy and not very thoughtful.

So: yes. Merry Christmas! And Happy Chanukah! From this Super Grinch in New Hampshire. I hope your holidays are lovely and that you find time to rest and enjoy the season.

  1. I know that moms tend to bear most of the burden when it comes to the holidays and that can lead to feeling rather grinchy, but promise me you’ll take some time for yourself every day, okay? You get to celebrate the holidays, too, even if celebrating means just getting away from everyone else and having some quiet. Merry Christmas, friend!

  2. Thank you for taking the time to blog this post Katie. Thinking of you and your family and wishing you all a Merry Christmas. Christmas adds a lot of more activities and this year for me especially. I am trying to get some things done today and feel terribly behind so I am a Grinch (and probably showing it way too much!). In the meantime trying to “turn myself around” and get back on the bus of gratitude and positivity. Merry Christmas to all you readers and hoping the New Year brings all of us peace, joy, and love!

  3. oh it makes me smile that those candy cane cookies are a tradition for y’all! I added TWO new sourdough discard recipes to my cooking baking this year – they’ll get the boys’ taste test tomorrow and if they pass, I’ll share the links with you. Thankfully I don’t have enough yarn to “sign up” for a full year, but maybe y’all will inspire me to knit at least a pair in 2025. Merry Merry!!

  4. The yarn at the top of the post is so pretty. I hope you find some time for yourself during the holiday crush. I think Mom’s and women in general bear the stress of all the preparations. It’s taken me years to let some of it go and not worry so much. Of course it’s easier because my children are grown. Enjoy the candy cane cookies.

  5. Happy Holidays to you and your family, Katie! I “borrowed” the self made sock club last year from The Yarn Harlot… it helped me knit 8 pairs of socks last year! I hope you find success in this too!
