Wednesday Check-In

Hello to Wednesday, friends. How has your week been going? Have you been taking care of yourself? Now is the time to focus on the little things keeping us alive and thriving.

Today I’m just doing a quick check-in and sharing some of the behind-the-scenes things I’m working on, including digitizing my book notes and an affiliate switch:

one box of my filled notebooks

Well, it was bound to happen. I’ve spent the week desperately searching for my book notes from a book I read in September 2020. I’m wanting to write something that connects Unsheltered to The Message. I remember carefully copying down key quotes from the audio of Unsheltered… and I cannot find it. Anywhere!

This little source of frustration has strengthened my resolve to move all of my book notes to an electronic source. Do you remember my post on Zettelkasten? The system of keeping a second brain? All of my research for that post told me that I should write things down instead of typing, but I ended the post saying that I had still decided that a digital system was the best for me. And then somewhere along the line, I decided that paper/pen was a more lasting and aesthetically pleasing way to go.

Well — it’s not exactly the most functional for me right now! So I’m going through the book journals that I can find and slowly copying them over to Notion. I was thinking about returning to Evernote but their free version isn’t as robust as it used to be.

Do you have an electronic recommendation for me?

Another thing I’m working on behind the scenes is switching my affiliation from Amazon to Bookshop.org. I’m trying to use Amazon as little as possible in my personal life and I want this space to reflect that. Every purchase from Bookshop.org compensates the affiliate of your choice as well as a profit-sharing pool that’s used as a safety net for independent bookstores.

I am busy setting up my storefront and it’s kind of an overwhelming task! But exciting. Are there any specific lists you’d like to see?

One list I’m curating is “Books for This Moment.” I’m hoping to write something more thoughtful about comparing The Message with Unsheltered (as I said above), but I think they both have something to say about where we are right now.

Unsheltered is set after the 2016 election and grapples with the same issues as today- how in the world did this happen? It also helped me think about the foundation of the US and how the cracks were obvious from the very beginning, which Kingsolver illustrated with the crumbling foundation of a present-day home. This book did not get great reviews but I thought it was fabulous and I still think about it all the time.

The Message is an incredible composition of essays by Ta-Nehisi Coates that examines white supremacy around the world. It’s hard to know where to start, but this quote tied it and Unsheltered together for me:

““We are, Black people, here and there, victims of the West – a people held just outside its liberal declarations, but kept close enough to be enchanted with its promises. We know the beauty of this house — its limestone steps, its wainscoting, its marble baths. But more, we know that the house is haunted, that there is blood in the bricks and ghosts in the attic.” pg 59, The Message, Ta-Nehisi Coates

On Tyranny was suggested to me by Kat and was also quotes in The Message. I haven’t read it yet but requested it from my own independent bookstore and will be picking it up today.

If you have any others books that I should read, please let me know!

And with that, dear friends, I must run. Please remember to drink some water today and try to take a walk. See you soon!

  1. Sounds like you are doing well Katie. I am managing given all that is…

I am always looking for a notebook. I have piles of books and notes and am always looking for a new ways to organize. I still prefer paper and pen. I like just a titled notebook for each topic.

I am focusing on self-care. Thanks for reminding us.

  2. The paper/digital conundrum gets me every time. I have heard much about Notion but haven’t take the time to figure it out. Now you have me recalling Unsheltered and I may need to revisit that one. A book I would suggest is I Never Thought of It That Way by Monica Guzman. I love that you are moving to Bookshop.org. You always give me something to think about.

    1. I am still pondering my blog post on Notion, Juliann. Please don’t give up on me!! 🙂 I feel like I might have to revisit Unsheltered too, given how this election turned out. There is just so much to read! Thank you for the recommendation for I Never Thought of it That Way – it sounds really good!

  4. I have book quotes written down all over the place as well… hmmm. This is a very timely (yes, this fits so well with my word for this year!) subject. I was looking for something I wrote some years ago and though I finally found it… it took way too long looking for it!

I love that Ta-Nehisi quote… that one keeps ringing in my head!

    1. I’m glad that you found the book quote you were looking for… I still haven’t!! And I’m still frustrated about it!

The Coates book was magnificent and I keep recommending it at the library. I am considering ordering a copy for my home!

  5. Bravo to switching over to Bookshop.org! I’ll admit that Amazon makes things a lot easier, but I’d much prefer to buy books from an indie if I can. I wish I had a recommendation for digitizing your notes; I think finding something we wrote in the past is a problem that all of us who are, um, verbose struggle with!

    1. Amazon makes things SO easy, but I’ve been slowly making the switch for a lot of my day-to-day purchases over the last few months and that decision calcified once the Bezos/WaPo decision about not endorsing Harris. I’m so tired of him getting rich at the expense of everyone else. I know that my purchases won’t make a difference, but perhaps with enough of us doing our best?

And yes — I think losing our book notes seems common, at least within my blog space! I wish there was an easy answer!

  6. I was an Evernote user and switched to Notion for the same reason you did! I only use the basic features but I prefer it over Evernote now. Barbara Kingsolver is my favorite author, and I DNF’d Unsheltered when I read it several years ago. However, I do want to be a completist so I am planning on picking it up again – I am glad to read your thoughts on it!

    1. Sarah – I think Unsheltered is my favorited BK. I know a lot of people felt like it was REALLY preachy and maybe it was… but I loved so much about it. Let me know how it goes if you decide to try again!

And I wish the free version of Evernote wasn’t so basic now! I really like that set-up a lot. But I’m learning Notion and am hoping to get a blog post up on it in a couple of weeks!

  7. I understand that writing/typing dilemma. While I would love to joy things down on paper, like you discovered, it’s not at all searchable. So I jot things down on apple notes on my phone, and transfer it to my second brain on Google docs. I use notion, but it loads slow for me and doesn’t look great on mobile, so I just use a simple word processor document. Great post!

  8. yay for the switch to Bookshop – I think your lists of what to read with the younger ones would be helpful. good luck with the paper/digital dilemma … I’m committed to paper (even if it means I capture something digitally, print it out, then cut/paste onto the paper!) I haven’t read Unsheltered; adding it to my TBR.

    1. Thank you for the idea for bookshop.org!

I love the idea of having all of my notes neatly written in a notebook… but I also love the idea of it being easier to filter by themes and ideas to help make connections in my reading. It is such a conundrum! I hope you love Unsheltered – it seems like it’s a polarizing choice. So many people disliked it because it felt so preachy…. but it felt like a timely sermon to me!

  9. I can’t offer any help with a digital system. I am old and prefer paper notebooks. I read Unsheltered and so look forward to thinking about it when I read The Message. I think the ways readers pair books is so interesting and often unique.

    1. There are so many reasons why I prefer notebooks for taking notes too! But I’m getting more used to Notion and am enjoying trying it out 🙂

I hope you get to read The Message soon. It was fantastic!

    1. Yay for a fan of Unsheltered! It seems like we’re in the minority for this one 😉 And yes — it feels good to be supporting bookshop.org and not adding to Amazon’s bottom line!
