Friday | At the Apple Orchard; Hurricane Helene

Friends, this has been the week of weather I’ve been hoping for in New Hampshire. Cloudy, cool, and a lot of rain over the last few days. However, my excitement about the weather has been moderated given the course of Hurricane Helene. Several of my dear blogging friends are in its path and I am on pins and needles, waiting to hear how they are. I know many of us are!

Here in New Hampshire, a big rainstorm was forecasted to start late Wednesday morning and last through Thursday evening. We knew we wanted to get to the apple orchard this week and early Wednesday seemed like our last opportunity. So we decided to go on a school field trip instead of gathering around the table for more formal learning. I’m always nervous about decisions like that (especially last minute ones) but it was a very good choice.

You can see in the pictures how overcast the sky was and clearly, we basically had the orchard to ourselves. We picked two pecks of macouns, honey crisp, and crimson crisp apples. The orchard is deceptively steep and large and we had fun racing up the trails to the very top (about a 15 minute walk uphill), which had the most beautiful section of honey crisp apples you can imagine.

And as wonderful as the fruit orchard is (they also have raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and grapes) they also have a cut-your-own flower garden that is amazing. They have three massive rows of zinnias and one with a wide variety of dahlias. It made my heart go pitter-patter! This garden is what I want at my house. As a perspective, here’s my little garden of zinnias, ageratums, and cosmos (with leggy sunflowers in the back):

I am absolutely not complaining about this little patch because it has kept Bronwyn and me full of bouquets this summer. But you know. I’m already dreaming up about how to expand it and where to plant my dahlias next year!

And once we got home from the orchard it was time to start baking. I roasted a pumpkin and froze its puree and Matthew made this beautiful pie yesterday. I’m hoping to make pumpkin snickerdoodles this weekend with some of the puree and save the rest for pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.

I hope you’re able to enjoy some fall weather this weekend. Mine will be the same as always: work at the library, cooking & cleaning, and maybe some reading. I’d also really like to do some knitting given the shift in the weather, but that might be too far out of reach right now. I hope your weekend is full of exactly what you need.

And I hope everyone in the path of Hurricane Helene is safe. Take good care.

  1. We’ve had a little taste of true fall weather this week, too — we’ve had rain! But it’s still warmer than I’d like and humid, and I haven’t been able to go apple picking, either. That looks like it was a great school field trip and you get to enjoy it for a while yet with all the yummy apples and pie and pumpkin!

  2. We’ve had some rain, as Sarah said. I am thankful for it! (despite not loving the humidity that comes with that rain… sigh!)

I think a trip to an orchard sounds lovely!! I used to take my kids in the fall… it was so fun! Your roasted pumpkin looks delicious! (and that pie!! wow!)

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Those dahlias!!! ❤️ I want to grow those – I’ve had a glorious zinnia patch this year, and will continue to grow them, but I’ve fallen in love with dahlias now 😂

Jealous of the apple-picking! We were supposed to be going to the NC mountains for an anniversary trip, and planned to hit an apple orchard over there — but Helene … In our part of NC we’ve just had wind and rain, thankfully none of the worse conditions further west. I’ve been watching reports from all my favorite mountain spots and 😕

    1. I just started growing dahlias this summer and love them! I hope you’re able to get some tubers next year. And so sorry about the hiccup in your trip. Relieved to hear that the terrible conditions missed your home. Stay safe!

  4. Lovely pictures! We had a small taste of fall here in Oklahoma last week, but it has warmed back up and none of the leaves seem ready to change yet. Praying for safety for those in the storm path.

Pumpkin snickerdoodles sound really good – I’ll have to track down a recipe to try soon!

  5. Katie,

Thank you for caring! We evacuated yesterday at the last minute and went to our daughter’s 2.5 hours away. We were safe there. The hurricane was believed to hit Tallahassee where I live and instead it hit about 45 miles away in Taylor County. We are now home and our house did not get any damage. We feel very blessed and also very sad for those who have suffered losses. Again, thank you for thinking of me and all the others that were in harms way. I hope this gets sent as we have no internet right now. I could not connect via email. Blessings to all the other readers that were in the path of Hurricane Helene.

  6. Thank you for thinking about those of us in the path of Helene. We had rain and wind but nothing like the destruction in Upper East TN and Western NC. So lucky.

Apple picking sounds like so much fun! That pie looks amazing. I want some pumpkin snickerdoodles now! 😁

  8. What a fun trip to the orchard. As Mary wrote, it is a treat to go with you. We are warm and dry here so while I wouldn’t wish a hurricane on anyone, we sure could use some rain. Your fall baking inspires me. Pumpkin snickerdoodles, now there is an idea.
