I Made a YouTube Video

I did something really scary this week: I recorded a video and uploaded it on YouTube!

It’s planner season and many of us are considering our systems for next year. I’ve been a Hobonichi fan for so long and have decided that I’ll be using an A5 Hon again next year.

I’ve been chatting with several of you via email about how I’ve been using my notebook lately, especially the journaling pages, and have wanted to share images with you all for quite a while. It seemed like filming a video was going to be the best way to do that so I gathered all of my courage, ordered a special light, and figured out how to use my headphones as a microphone. I recorded the video and uploaded it on Monday night, then had to figure out how to give it a cover and tags, etc yesterday. Baby steps.

And here it is, in all of its awkward glory:

Tools I use most often:

In this video, I’m sharing how I lay out the page to include room for a daily quote, a to-do list (as needed), a place for notes throughout the day, and morning & evening journaling. I also give you a few strategies that make it easier to get started when you don’t know what to write about.

I have to admit that this was fun and I want to learn how to edit videos now. I’d be grateful if you clicked over and gave it a watch, especially if you’d like some ideas about how to get started journaling. I’d like to record more, so please subscribe if you’re interested in following along with me on YouTube!

Friends – I hope your Wednesday is lovely. I plan to be back on Friday with an update on my reading this week; spoiler alert: it has been good.

  1. Love, love, love this! I haven’t finshed watching yet but look forward to continuing as the day goes on. Maybe this will even help me get back to more regular writing in my journal — something I’ve fallen away from laterly. Thanks you, Katie!

    1. No worries, Jordy. It’s much longer than I thought it would be and I don’t expect anyone to watch the whole thing ๐Ÿ˜… But I hope it helps you find a way to sit down with your journal more often!

  2. I’m giving you a round of applause for being brave and posting this! Yay, Katie! I’m not really a planner person, but I will be watching the full video when I have time because I love hearing your voice and seeing how you use your notebook.

  4. Well done, in every way, Katie! And the fact that you enjoyed it and want to learn/do moreโ€”? All the better.
Iโ€™ve experimented with journaling my One Word this year, differently than I have before. While I donโ€™t write in it daily, I love what it has becomeโ€ฆrecord, reflection, art journal, vision. Itโ€™s fun to see/hear/learn how everyone does it differentlyโ€”and itโ€™s sacred, all the same.

Looking forward to another video sometime!

    1. Thanks so much, Carolyn! And how wonderful to experiment with journaling about your Word this year. It’s so helpful to try new things and activate different parts of our brain in order to examine the topics that are important to us. So well done!

  5. oh my goodness – how fun and way to go, Katie!! I’ve added the video to my watch later queue and I hope to find a few minutes for that soon! (I also clicked the link about those .4mm pens. I journal with a fountain pen, but I need a pointy pen for my planner pages!)

    1. Kat – you are so kind. Thank you! The planner in this video is the 2024 Hobonich A5 Hon. The art work on the cover is by Tomitaro Makino. Here’s the little blurb that Hobonichi provides on him: “[he] was born in Sakawa, a rural village west of Kochi City, on the 24th of April in 1862. His curiosity in plant life developed into a devotion to botanical research. At the age of 22 he moved to the capital to pursue his interest at Tokyo University. Three years later he launched the Botanical Magazine Tokyo, an esteemed journal still published today. An avid field botanist, Makino collected some 400,000 botanical specimens and named over 1,500 new species and subspecies of plants during his life.”

I have several notebooks from Hobonichi that are illustrated by him! They are all lovely ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. It’s nice to hear your voice! It’s really cool that you have this outlet for expression. Thanks for sharing a glimpse with the world! I had no idea how many YouTube videos there were on Hobonichi journaling, BTW!

  8. I loved the video! It’s so odd to hear someone’s voice that you’ve been reading for a long time, but never met. I am so tempted to buy more notebooks… but I already have so many!

    1. Thank you, Sarah! I say use the notebooks you have! And if you’re interested in Hobonichis, they also have notebooks that start 4/1, so if you’re using your notebooks consistently and decide on a new notebook, April isn’t too far away!
