Week 35 in my Notebook | 2024

This weekend was practically magical. Friends, it feels like fall out there! Yesterday was especially cool and breezy, so the kids and I spent almost the entire day outside. And last night my husband got the fire pit going and we were all delighted. I think we’re expecting a slight warm-up this week but nothing in the 90s and I’m holding my breath, thinking that we might have made it to fall?

I’m back today with a look into my notebook. It seems like a lot of us enjoy keeping a record of our day and it was a lot of fun chatting with all of you about what went right last Monday! Let’s do it again?

A quick note on tools for the week:

Overall, a lot of things went right this week:

  • Monday was Labor Day but we managed four days of school. Reading, writing, and math were done everyday; we spent two days learning about the ancient civilization of Caral, a day learning about mountains and rifts on the ocean floor, and a day learning about expressionism painting.
  • I managed 3 resistance workouts, 2 bike rides, and 4 yoga sessions.
  • I stayed on top of laundry and somehow folded and put it away every day last week except for Saturday (but don’t think I documented it every day? That’s okay. It still happened!)
  • I baked the best loaf of sourdough bread I’ve ever made, as well as sourdough biscuits, brownies, and blueberry muffins. We ate all of our meals at home last week, except for a Taco Bell trip on Saturday when I finished work. That means I prepared breakfast, lunch (minus Saturday’s lunch), and dinner all week, plus approximately 52,332 snacks.
  • We vacuumed the van! (major highlight of my week)
  • I read a lot, especially this weekend. More about that later this week.
  • I journaled every morning and evening. I’m trying to figure out the best way to share that with you while hiding what I’ve written!

This week is going to be a strange one: tomorrow is a remote learning day for Colton and I’m working on Thursday, so our school rhythm will be off. And today I woke up very dizzy and this usually comes in waves, so I expect to be thrown off balance most of this week and that will affect my workout routine. This week will be about practicing flexibility and being okay with whatever I can physically manage to do — and I’m sure that plenty will still go right, as long as I’m looking for it.

I might be back on Wednesday with a journaling post if I can figure it out. But until I make it back to this space, please tell me: what went right for you last week? What are you struggling with? How was your weekend? How is the weather treating you?

I hope your week starts off well. Take good care!

    1. Thank you, Laurie. It’s really no big deal – Every 6 months or so I wake up dizzy and it hangs around a few days and then goes away. Perhaps I should discuss with a doctor but it’s so sporadic that I don’t even think about it when appointments roll back around! It’s not something I’m especially worried about, just a nuisance. Usually a reminder that it’s okay to get a little more rest 🙂 I am already feeling much better!

      1. That would be lovely if you could. We are excited though, cooler temperatures are in the forecast ☺️

  1. I hardly comment although I am an avid reader of your blog. But I couldn’t resist as I am a huuuge fan of Hobonichi as well, and just got my A5 Cousin for 2025. And then I opened my email and spotted your post.

Journaling in my Techo is one of the best parts of my day 🙂

    1. I am so glad you commented, Nish! Thank you! It’s always fun to meet another Hobonichi super fan 🙂 I also just got next year’s notebook and I’m so excited to use it. I ordered the a5 Hon in the yellow liberty print.

  2. What a full (and fun) week! Whew! I am a slacker compared to you! I did more painting than writing this week, but that is okay. I also cleaned out some garden beds… but I still have a few waiting for some attention!

  3. We had a beautiful weekend here with highs in the 70’s which was heavenly. Back to the 80’s this week but no 90’s thank goodness!

What went right – I got in three workouts. I started some backyard foliage clean-up projects. And I had a great Storytime last week!

I want to come over to your place and eat your baked goods! I’m feeling the urge to bake again – a sure sign of fall.

  4. Sounds like we had very similar weather — I had to put on socks this weekend, and today I’ve decided it’s officially Hot Tea After Lunch season! I am enjoying the cooler temperatures, the warm (but not hot) sunshine, and the lower humidity, but we desperately need rain, and I’d really love a good thunderstorm or two.

I am super impressed at all you got done last week! I hope with the unusual schedule this week and your dizziness, you’ll go easy on yourself if your list of accomplishments isn’t quite as long.

    1. I am 100% always up for a thunderstorm! NH might not have much of an opportunity for any more this year but I’m dying for our first all-day fall rain! And cozy socks and hot tea elevate everything!

This has been a strange week so far and I’m doing my best to take it all as it comes. I stayed up way too late last night for the debate and am struggling a bit this morning but hope to get back on track once Colton gets on the bus in a few hours! I’m planning to email you later today about Held. Can’t wait to discuss it with you!!

  5. Sounds like a great week! Happy for you! We had some cooler weather and some rain! I finished Held and must say it was very different than anything I have ever read. I had to work to keep track of the shifts in the book, but found it quite brilliant. I especially loved the quotes and tried to find something on google that just listed all of these quotes, but never found such a list. Is it a re-read for me-maybe. Did I love love it, probably not, but parts of it I really liked. It was just very different and I wondered if I was missing the beauty of the depth of the book.

    1. I agree about the quotes – it was full of some good ones! I spent a lot of time writing down all of the characters in each vignette and tried to keep track of who was related to who. It was such a puzzle for me! I think a ton of it went straight over my head but there were parts that really struck me. It sounds like we had a lot of similar thoughts about it!

  6. Goodness, you had a busy week getting so much accomplished. I hope the dizzy spell is short-lived. Vertigo is not fun. Last week – I managed to get ready for a house guest and get a few more tomatoes in the freezer. I also got started on mending a quilt I pieced and quilted by hand quite some time ago. I’ve been putting that off because I’d rather be doing some other kind of handwork.

    1. Thank you, Jane! I’m already feeling much better, which is good considering that the dizziness tends to stick around much longer.

And wow – I am impressed with what went well for you! It’s always nice to be able to use veggies from the garden in the dead of winter! And mending is never on the top of my list but it’s so rewarding when a garment or quilt is taken care of so carefully. Nice work tending to the details!!
