Summer Settling

Goodbye to the most perfect weekend! Cool and sunny on Saturday, lots of rain on Sunday. It felt like the best of both worlds! We are finally settling into the season and I’m so happy about that. I am feeling more and more like myself every day and I know that for two reasons: I am reaching for my notebooks more, for planning and reflection; and I am out checking gardens almost every day, looking for any new growth.

I know I’m doing well when my notebooks are a regular part of my day. Other than morning journaling, I ignored my notebooks most of the winter but have been pulling them back into their daily rotation for the last month or so.

These are my current every day notebooks:

  • Hobonichi Hon is my daily, weekly, monthly planner and for important notes I might need later (insurance calls, planning for Colton, etc).
  • Some Lines a Day is a 5 year journal. I fill in a brief summary of the day, typically about wildlife and gardening. Special birds, whatever has been planted, the first peek of an asparagus spear for the season, etc. It’s helpful and fun to look back on.
  • Hobonichi Techo is for morning pages. I think you all know how important daily journaling is for me!

I have been using the Hobonichi line off and on since about 2017 and am still in love with it. I adore Japanese stationery!

I was planning to take current pictures of our gardens yesterday but wasn’t able to get anything worthwhile with all of the rain. So I won’t talk quite as much as about that in this post as I was planning, but I do have a little something to share.

We only used about a quarter of our garden space last year and have decided to get all of it cleaned up and ready for planting, just in case. We found so many friends in the fallow places! Snakes, toads, the biggest spiders of your life. Somehow living there together all nestled in the ignored garden fabric and loose soil from previous years. It was almost a shame to clear it all out but they are welcome to return and help us with the pests that are sure to come. I am hopeful that they will find the tomato hornworm eggs before they hatch for the season and take care of them right away!

We are ready to start the week! We will be homeschooling and this is Colton’s last week of school – so it is full of activities and extra things he needs to be prepared for. I should probably figure out gifts for his teachers and helpers for the year too! I’m also trying to take care of insurance issues, which feels never ending. Never ending. But I am doing my best to take things one step at a time!

I hope your week gets off to a good start. Take good care!

  1. It was the perfect weekend of weather! Great for all things growing and watching the backyard wildlife! (I know there are snakes, but I prefer them not to be seen… ever! lol)

    Happy Monday!

  2. Love this snapshot of your early summer days, Katie! I keep a 5-year few-words-a-day journal noting similar things as you. It’s one of the few kinds of ‘everyday’ journals that suits me!

  3. That sounds like a great weekend! I would have enjoyed some rain, but we only got a sprinkling — not enough to water the plants.

Life would be so much simpler if we didn’t have to deal with insurance, wouldn’t it?

    1. I agree about the insurance! We all pay so much money for the coverage — and then have to jump through all of the hoops to actually use it. It drives me crazy!

I hope you get some overnight rain this week — not any that will keep you from getting outside but enough to keep your garden happy for a little while!

  4. It was a lovely weekend down here too. But unfortunately, it’s going to finally get hot on us….BOOOOO! I’ve really been savoring our lucky break in temps so far this year. I guess reality was bound to hit sooner or later.

I’m glad you’ve had time to get to your notebooks!

    1. The heat is headed our way too 😦 Probably not as bad as TN but I’m still not looking forward to it! I hope you’re still able to spend some time with your flowers, despite it!

  5. isn’t it wonderful to feel grounded in pen and paper? I switched 100% to a larger format journal (Leuchtturm A5) last year for everything but my planner (still using a Travelers Notebook there) and I love all that space for writing!

    1. YES!! And the Leuchtturm is so wonderful – I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Most of my notebooks are a5 and it’s such a wonderful size. BUT – I am enjoying the a6 for early morning journaling. The page length is much more approachable for those early mornings!

  6. It sounds like you had a good weekend. I do believe that gardening in whatever shape or form is good for the soul. I’m glad you have time to be outdoors.
