Friday | A Cloudy & Rainy June!

I don’t want to alarm you but it is now mid-June and we’re nearly halfway through 2023! How has June been treating you? The weather in New Hampshire has been perfect for me – cloudy and rainy. But it’s been hard to keep up with a lot of things this month and I’m looking for ways to find my focus. And since it’s Friday, I’m here with a collection of things that have been bringing me joy lately — which is always a great way to figure out what’s important right now!

GROWING:

Our garden is much smaller this year – just a few tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil plants. I miss making the rounds every day but don’t miss all of the work it takes to care for a big garden. I love that I can focus so much energy on our homeschooling and small flower beds that are right outside my front door. Peony season passes way too quickly and I was happy to take the picture up top!

DRINKING:

Friends, I am totally obsessed with making my own iced lattes lately. I’ve even stopped at Dunkin for Matthew this week and decided against ordering anything for myself because I’d rather make my own at home. That’s no small feat! I am using my Bialetti to brew the espresso. I fill my tumbler up with ice and then fill it halfway with the brewed espresso; add a little bit of sugar and then top the cup off with milk. It is the best pick-me-up!

EXERCISING:

A few weeks ago I wrote that I was succeeding with my health goals. I’m happy to report that, despite a few bumps, I have stayed on track! And this week I have noticed an increase in my strength, flexibility, and springiness (this is important to me because one of my goals is to move with buoyancy. I know it sounds strange, but I want to be able to leap up from my seat and take on a task with gusto instead of with moans and groans). I’ve also noticed an increase in my mental resiliency when thinking about exercise and its place in my life, which is a welcomed improvement.

READING:

I am still listening to The Covenant of Water and reading The Bandit Queens and When I Was a Child. But I just got a Libby notification that Birnam Wood is finally available (after placing it on hold on April 19th!!). My loan on The Bandit Queens has almost expired and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to finish it in time so now I have to decide: just let that one go and get started on Birnam Wood? Or do my best to finish before the loan expires? This is the hard part of juggling borrowed books!

WATCHING:

We are still watching Yellowstone on the weekends and are on the fourth season. Taylor Sheridan is quite a storyteller but I hate his character on the show. I’m also hoping to start A Small Light soon, the story of the woman who sheltered Anne Frank and her family. I have a feeling it’s going to make me want to reread Frank’s diary!

Today we’ll be spending some time learning at the table and this afternoon will be my opportunity to fold and put away the mountain of clean laundry that has accumulated this week. I am hoping that this evening will be a relatively easy bedtime for the kids and that I have some time on the couch with my audiobook and a stitching project (my Junction sweater and my Mandolin quilt are my current priorities). This weekend is expected to be another rainy and cool weekend and we have absolutely no plans. How about you?

  1. Fingers crossed for an easy bedtime — and happy to hear that you’re feeling the results of exercise. I also find that it makes a really big difference — partly I think it’s the physical benefits and partly the self-care message that we give ourselves when we do it. My routine of walking in the woods has been slightly disrupted by some mornings of puppy care — but mostly I’ve sustained it and it helps so much. Hope you have a wonderfully cozy weekend!

    1. I love your idea about the self-care messages that exercise brings us. And I love that you’re still walking in the woods as much as possible! Your morning haikus are a wonderful result. Also — do you have puppy pictures? I don’t want to be pushy but I’d love to see your new friend!

  2. I am a little jealous of your rain — we’re on the edge of drought here, and although we’ve gotten quite a bit of rain this week, we’re still behind average.

I can’t believe that the year is almost halfway done and would really like it to slow down a little! My daughter reminded me that yesterday was her half birthday, which means that she’ll be 14 in six months (and I’m still getting used to the idea of her being 13).

I vote for trying to finish up The Bandit Queens (it goes pretty quickly at the end); Birnam Wood is one of those books that starts out a little slow and rapidly speeds up, so I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finishing it before it’s due back to the library. Happy reading!

    1. I followed your advice on the books — thank you!

14! That’s just amazing. I also wish the year would slow down but I’m already looking forward to fall and starting a new school year. I hope you get some steady rain this summer. For the first time in several years, my part of NH is nowhere near drought status. It keeps Matthew busy on our 1.5 acre with a push mower, but it’s so nice to be saving on water in the gardens and to have a full rain barrell.

  3. I gave up a coffee maker almost 10 years ago and I use my Bialetti’s (I have two) exclusively for all the coffee I drink. I am so thrilled with Iced Coffee Season… and the best afternoon treat is to froth a bit of milk to pour in… Starbucks or Dunkin have nothing on my coffees!

Have a great weekend… I hope we get some of your rain as well!

    1. I’m not sure I’m ready to give up the ease of a coffee maker but I love this idea! And I think you’re the person who introduced the Bialetti to me – so thank you for changing my life!!!

  4. I’m glad your summer has been on the cool side with plenty of rain. Another great thing about making your own iced coffee is you are saving $$$ that you can use elsewhere. Maybe a special carryout once a month for supper? Or a special run for ice cream with the children. Enjoy your knitting!

  5. We are in a drought here in Illinois, so maybe you can try to send some of your rain our way!
I recommend that you finish up Bandit Queens. Birnam Wood is a page turner and was a pretty quick read for me.
Hope you have a good weekend!

  6. I do love a good rainy day! We had a whopper of a storm on Friday mid-day – just as I was having a work conference call. LOL I hope your weekend is going well and that you are finding pockets of time for YOU!

    1. I love a good storm, Vera! The timing could have been better for you, I’m sure, but I’m glad you all managed to get some rain anyway! This past weekend was a really good one – thank you 🙂

  7. We are in severe drought status although we have had a little more rain recently. Enjoy your quiet weekend. I hope bedtime goes well – all weekend. The library is such a wonderful thing but you are right sometimes juggling the books and holds is challenging. I guess the good news is you can always get back on the list and check out a book for the second time.

    1. I imagine that you guys have droughts nearly every summer, Jane? Life on the prairie is hard — I am amazed at what people were able to do before water hoses existed! Thank you for all the well wishes — the weekend was lovely and I have no complaints!

  8. I love thinking of you bouncing up from the floor to do the next thing! We are having pretty typical June weather here – June gloom – but the overcast and cool do help with better sleep. Enjoy you reading and gardening and playing

    1. Ha! I’m not bouncing up from the floor yet. But maybe one day? I think you could also describe New Hampshire as “june gloom” this year too. I am personally loving it!! I hope your week is going well, Juliann!

  9. buoyancy is such a great word … and what a wonderful way to frame up a moving goal! (and I’m glad you feel successful with yours) – glad you figured out how NOT to return that Kindle loan 🙂 I’m still making my regular hot coffee drink in the afternoons (thanks to our coolish/wet weather) and look forward to trying a COLD latte … maybe next month?!

    1. I felt like I was cheating the library but decided it was worth it. I finished it in time anyway!! How awesome that things are staying cool for you down in GA – what a relief!
