June! I guess it’s really summer now? It has certainly felt like it this week. I have been plodding along with nothing out of the ordinary to share here, which is probably a good thing. I have been spending a lot of time with my journals, trying to come up with a plan for tackling clutter around the house and personal projects I have been thinking about. I can spend a lot of time planning and then never execute, so I’m trying to figure out how to motivate myself to take some action!
Today’s post is another collection of things bringing me joy. This is the perfect sort of summary for a warm Friday morning!
Listening to:
Birds! I have the Merlin app going almost the whole time I’m at my desk in the morning. They are very loud this morning. I don’t think I’ve picked up anything new this week so I think the major migrations might have passed, but it’s still fun to see who is hanging around our backyard. I’m learning who the early birds are by sound, which is exciting.
Reading:
Time Shelter. It’s so much better than I anticipated, especially since I struggled with last year’s International Booker Winner: Tomb of Sand. It’s set in Bulgaria and is a very interesting pairing with my current slow & steady book: Doctor Zhivago. Communism lasted in Bulgaria through the 1980s so it’s really interesting to see how it has settled into the memories of Bulgarians, especially since this book plays so much with the idea of memories and how they shape us. It is fascinating!
Hiding:
From the heat. We didn’t play outside at all yesterday. Our weather station measured a high of 95*F! That’s a temperature made for much later in the summer in New Hampshire. I’ve been going out early in the morning and giving all of my flowers drinks of water to help them get through the scorching days and so far, so good. We haven’t lost anybody yet!
Anticipating:
Thunderstorms. They are forecasted for this afternoon and I am so excited. My plan: brew some espresso, make an iced latte, turn on a movie for the kids, and read my book! Thunderstorms are one of my favorite types of weather and I hope this one doesn’t fizzle out before it gets here.

All of the Summer Reading Guides floating around! I’m hoping to put together my summer reading for y’all and to share it at some point next week. It changes a lot and the TBR in my reading journal is a mess!
Loving:
My time at the library. I stay busy the whole time I’m there and I love having little projects to work on. Plus – the perks of being surrounded by books cannot be overestimated. I’m still new and I know there will be parts of the job that will become less shiny and exciting as time goes on, but it has been a really good fit so far. I go back tomorrow morning and I’ve already filled my little notebook with the things I want to do when I’m there.
Today’s thunderstorm is expected to usher in some cooler weather, so that will be a nice change for the weekend. Other than my time at the library, we don’t have any plans. But I’m sure it will include some time outside once the rain passes; I hope your own weekend is full of exactly what you need. I plan to be back on Monday, hopefully with a summer reading update. Until then – take good care!

You are the second blogging friend who has praised the Merlin app. Time for me to get on board, I think.
Hot, hot, too darned hot for the beginning of June in northern New England. What the heck! Unfortunately, this is the wave of the future, and we have to learn to adapt.
I’ve been thinking of giving Time Shelter a go. What a great title. Your comments about the book are edging me closer.
How wonderful that you love your job at the library. Have to say, sounds like a perfect fit.
Finally, I love the top picture of the typewriter and the drink.

You will LOVE the Merlin app. It is so much fun!! Thank you for all of the kind words. Time Shelter has been thought-provoking, for sure. It dragged a little for me in the middle, but is picking up again. Whew!

I hope the thunderstorm comes through for you. We’re really dry here in northern Indiana and could use some rain. I’ve got a book recommendation for you. I normally listen to audio books because I can get my steps in while listening. Last week I was at the library and picked up a real, hold in your hands book.
Beyond that, the Sea by Laura Spence-Ash. I enjoyed this book, hope you do too. I could make a few more comments but don’t want to spoil it for you. It’s an easy read, I read it in 2 days!

The thunderstorm missed us! But we still got some cooler weather and a few showers over the weekend, which was such a relief. Thank you so much for the book recommendation — it looks so good!

I love a good thunderstorm but they rarely happen here. Hope it cools off. Early is too soon for such hot weather. Will look forward to your reading list.

It is too hot here in east-central Illinois and we are in a moderate drought. We could do with a good soaking rain and some cooler weather!
You have convinced me to add Time Shelter to my TBR!

We’ve been hearing some beautiful birdsong the past few days, but it’s mainly robins, cardinals, and sparrows (all plentiful in my neighborhood), so I haven’t yet pulled out Merlin. Even if it’s nothing novel or exciting, it’s still nice to hear.
We’re also very hot here today, and we could really use a thunderstorm! I honestly don’t remember the last time we had rain — maybe two weeks ago? It’s so dry out there. There’s a chance of scattered storms tomorrow, but it sounds like they’ll be widely scattered. I hope you get your storm! I also love sitting inside, curled up with a book, while one rolls through. And I hope it clears out the heat so you can enjoy the outdoors this weekend without melting!

I hope you got some rain over the weekend – two weeks is way too long to go without a soaking! The thunderstorms missed us on Friday but we still got the benefit of a cooler weekend with some light scattered showers – it was lovely!

I do hope you got your thunderstsorm! We sure could use the rain. Fletch is watering the garden morning and evening! We skip having the lawn done every other week. All is so dry. I’ve been hearing a lot of birds early – like 4 a.m. or 4:30 a.m. when I am still (trying to) sleep. And Fletch commented that there was a mockingbird singing one night when he came up to bed late (once when I shared an apartment with friends, there was a mocking bird who sang in the middle of the night every night…drove my friend crazy!!).

I hope you got some rain over the weekend, Vera. Watering twice a day sounds intense! And yes – the birds are waking up around 4am here too; luckily for me, I’m also awake and they’re not keeping me from sleeping! What a funny mockingbird story 🙂

I hope you’ve had more thunderstorms to enjoy – those hot temperatures are made for storms! and I’ve been thinking about y’all this week with the smoke – yikes! I decided not to read the Booker International winner this year … wonder if you might make me change my mind?!
