I think we can say it’s summer? I put away the snow boots and winter jackets this week, we’ve had some amazing rainstorms that have looked and felt like summer, and the trees and grass are the most lovely shades of green. So I’m calling it. Summer!

The peony bloomed this week! The header picture of this post is the entire peony bush so you can see that we got several flowers on it, but this one is the star of the show. We planted this bush last year and there was just one bud on it that never bloomed. So this is the first year that we’ve had peonies and I’m over the moon! I’m glad I took the picture when I did because some little hands have already ripped off most of the petals. It was nice while it lasted.
I considered stopping this post there – the peony is a showstopper and has brought me enough joy to last the entire summer, I think. But I was able to come up with a few more things:
A Few Things I’ve Loved This Week:
- I just started the fifth episode of the fourth season of Stranger Things and have been transfixed. This season feels way scarier than any of the others and I am here for it. It is so bizarre and over the top but the characters feel like my best friends in the whole world. I adore them all. I don’t want this season to end! I am so glad there will be a second part to the season in July.
- We’ve had some lovely rain. I love it for so many reasons and won’t bore you with them all, but I’m happy whenever I see showers on the radar and even happier when they actually appear in real life.
- I’ve kept the window at my desk open all week and it catches the best breezes and bird song. My life list on the Merlin app keeps growing. I got a recording of a broad-winged hawk this week!
- I’ve also learned that the bird I hear most often isn’t a finch like I thought. It’s a red-eyed vireo, which I had never even heard of.
- (Last bird thing today, I promise.) I often see bright yellow little birds flitting through the trees and have always assumed they were goldfinches. I’ve been surprised by how many different yellow birds there are!
- My kids are finished with their dentist appointments for the next six months. Phew!

I’ve been playing with my morning routine lately. I missed my spin bike when I was so sick and have been using my early morning writing time for bike rides. I love exercising early in the morning for so many reasons, but I still think this time is best left for some quiet reflection at my desk. Despite all of the wonderful exercise endorphins, I’ve been quite melancholy and aimless without this morning anchor. I’m going to go back to exercising in the evening after I put the kiddos to bed. The only true “free” time I have is the early morning and late evening hours and I can only fill it with so much. And as much as I want to do other things lately, like sit at my sewing machine or with my knitting needles, I have to prioritize the activities that have the greatest impact on my mental and physical health — writing and exercise.
All of that is to say that I’m going to try a slightly new blogging routine so that my posts are shorter and more approachable for me (and you!). I hope I can get started next week. Wish me luck!
Matthew and Colton were both home yesterday because of Colton’s dentist appointment, so I spent the whole afternoon thinking it was Saturday. Now it feels like Sunday morning. I’m thrilled to remind myself that today is only Friday and the entire weekend still stretches before us. I have no idea what we’ll be doing, but I know chips and queso are involved because of the Celtics game tonight.
I hope you have a weekend full of exactly what you need. Take good care.
Happy Friday — I love hearing about how you’re enjoying the birds, and the showers. (I love the glistening puddles ringed with yellow pollen…although it’s kind of awful to think about breathing all that in!) Have a nurturing and fun-filled weekend…

The pollen is fascinating to the kids! They love splashing around in those puddles and watching the pollen swish around 🙂
Enjoy your weekend!

Guess what, it’s Friday and you have the weekend before you😊 Your peony is beautiful Katie! This season of Stranger Things is good but I did not care for some of the darkness. I look forward to seeing the rest of it in July though.

Thank you for reminding me that it’s Friday! Yay!! 🙂 You’re right – this season is quite dark. I have to cover my eyes a lot! I’m really, really enjoying it though.
Have a great weekend!

Chips and queso are definitely worth looking forward to! In central Maine, our weather has been similar to yours, and the two days of rain we just had feels like a blessed event. Will be going out this afternoon to work in the garden, and I’ll be checking my rain gauge. I, too, love “Stranger Things,” all the beasts, but mostly the swirl of characters, how they come together and then they separate. My favorite kind of stories are both plot driven and character driven, and “Stranger Things” sure delivers both. Anyway, like you, I’ll be waiting anxiously for July.

I definitely overdid it on the chips and queso last night, but that’s okay. The rain has been wonderful, hasn’t it? Our rain barrel has stayed nice and full so far this year!
I watched a little more of the 5th episode of Stranger Things last night and you are so right. Right now half of the characters are still in California (and some are in Russia or on their way there) and I’m anxiously awaiting their return to Hawkins. This is such an adventure! I think I’ve finally convinced my husband to watch it from the beginning with me, but he’s asked to wait until there’s a break in sports. I think that’s a good compromise!

I saw a red-eyed vireo for the first time this year in Erie! It was such a treat! I just love that Merlin App! We are saving Stranger Things for a rainy weekend… but I am so eager to watch it!
Your flowers look so beautiful! Have a great weekend yourself!

I’m still not even sure if I’ve SEEN the red-eyed vireo… I just know that it’s always around! Saving Stranger Things for a rainy weekend is brilliant. I wish I could binge it in a couple of days!! I’ve inched forward another 15 minutes in the 5th episode. Oh my goodness. It is so good!

I love the small of peonies! When I smell them, I’m always taken back to hears ago as a child smelling the peonies in my grandfathers garden. Water puddles and children, what a great combination! Have a wonderful weekend, it’s always so nice when there are extra days in the weekend.

My children are very big fans of water puddles… and luckily our driveway is full of ruts and we almost always have them after every rain shower 😉 I’m thrilled to see how many people here love peonies – we are all such kindred spirits!
I hope you have a great weekend! I’m really hoping to spend some time with my sewing machine today… I’ll be thinking of you and all of your beautiful quilts!

I love peonies! They are my favorite smell in the world. I have the standard magenta colored ones, a Sarah Bernhardt which is pastel pink, and there is a deep red one. This gives me enough to put them in vases around the house so I can smell them as I walk through a room. The only hitch is all the vases have to be up high so the kitten doesn’t knock them down!

I love that you have enough to keep around your house! And kittens are so crazy… they create such havoc!
I hope you have a great weekend 🙂

I haven’t seen many new birds around here (we have lots of sparrows and robins), but I spotted a red-bellied woodpecker on my walk a couple of days ago, and earlier in the week I caught three hawks (couldn’t tell what kind) circling over my street — it looked to me like they were playing!
We have also been having a lot of summer-like rain (thunderstorms, especially), which is great for all the plants. It’s a little cooler here right now, but we’re supposed to go back to the 90s next week. And my daughter is done with school, so it’s summer as far as I’m concerned!

You two might really enjoy the Merlin app for your walks! Since using it, I’ve been way more in tune with all of the bird sounds I hear.
Thank you for all of your kind words. I hope you have a great weekend!

Have a wonderful weekend Katie! Your peonies are so pretty. We have a lot of yellow Warblers that come through our neck of the woods on their migration paths (and we have a lot of goldfinches too). Lately we’ve been seeing a bluebird…just one who comes every afternoon to sit on the same branch in the same tree and then dive-bomb for insects. Fun to watch.

I’m always so impressed with people who can exercise in the evening? I am an early-morning exericiser and by the time the evening rolls around I am DONE. I’m very impressed!
Your flowers are gorgeous and I love the bird talk as well. This was such an uplifting post!

Thanks for mentioning the Merlin app a few weeks ago. I used it on our trip to the Cincinnati area earlier this week when we were in parks while my fellas played disc golf. I got some really cool birds, like a Blue Gray Gnatcatcher, which I’d never heard of before.

Love the peony! Our peony season was about a month ago so it’s always surprising to see them still popping up in other zones. I’m in the same stage of life as you are with little kids, and I tend to have my “free” time in the evening. I totally get what you are saying with there being too much to fit in! I need whole days off to be able to get in all my hobbies 🙂

Those peonies are stunning! Even without little hands to snatch the petals, the blooms are always too short-lived, aren’t they? I love all the bird links you shared … I feel like I learned something this morning. and I hope your weekend lived up to this happy Friday post!

The weekend was great! So glad you enjoyed the bird stuff – I’m embarrassed to admit how much of our day revolves around birds right now, ha. And you’re right about the peony blooms. We walked outside yesterday morning and all of the petals had collapsed to the ground. But what a show while it lasted!

Peonies are one of my favorites. I remember when I was very young we had a huge peony plant, bush, in our yard. It was my mama’s pride and joy. The peonies smelled so good I still remember burying my face in those huge blooms and breathing in that wonderful smell. Good memories.
