Podcasts Lately

I’m trying to listen to podcasts again. When I drove to work every day, I had several on rotation. Most were about an hour, so I could listen to the first half on my way to work and then finish on the way home. It was a neat and tidy way to learn about something that interested me or enjoy the story that someone had to tell.

I still drive to work two days a week, but my husband usually keeps the van so that he has a way to transport all three kids in a pinch. So that means I take his (slightly older) Rav 4 and while his radio system allows me to hook up my phone and play the podcast, the sound is weird and it’s just not as enjoyable.

But I miss podcasts! I’ve found a couple more that I can squeeze in here and there and wanted to share them with you, in case you’re looking for something to help round out your day.

Bear Brook

This podcast is produced by NHPR, my local public radio station! Bear Brook is a state park in New Hampshire. In the 80s, a blue barrel was found that contained the body of two unidentified people: a woman and a child. In 2000, another blue barrel was found with two children inside. Their identities haunted New Hampshire State Police and armchair detectives alike.

I’ve been listening to this on Sunday mornings while I flip pancakes for the boys. It’s fun to listen to something local and to learn about a mystery in my own state!

Keeping A Notebook

This podcast has super short episodes that I listen to while I pack snacks for my biggest bear’s day at school. The host, Nina LaCour, teaches writing and offers some amazing practical advice for people who just want to get started. I am totally loving this and look forward to packing lunchboxes every day!

Believe it or not, those two have been enough to keep me busy lately. I still have a few of my favorites, like On Being, This American Life, and What Should I Read Next?, but those are much harder to fit into my day right now. Are you enjoying any podcasts right now? Do you have any recommendations for me to start after I finish these?

  1. I am a podcast addict! I listen to them in the mornings while getting ready, and also sometimes at night while cleaning up from dinner. Also in the car when I’m by myself. I listen to SO MANY and I’m constantly having to delete episodes from my phone because they pile up. Right now I’m loving For the Love by Jen Hatmaker, The Happier podcast with Gretchen Rubin, Code Switch from NPR, It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders from NPR, and of course What Should I Read Next? I just started listening to the Get Booked podcast from BookRiot, and sometimes listen to the Book Riot podcast. Also, Annotated from Bookriot. (Yeah, I told you I’m ridiculous.) One thing is that I’ve NEVER listened to a serialized mystery or news story podcast. I prefer the ones where every episode is self-contained and doesn’t build on another one, but then again I’ve not tried the other kind, I’m probably missing out. Maybe I’m just afraid to become addicted to more podcasts!

    1. Oh my goodness – you DO listen to a lot! I used to listen to the book riot podcasts too, but had to stop because my reading list ended up totally ridiculous. Thanks for all of these recommendations, especially the NPR ones!
