Welcome Dawsey!

I am delighted to introduce you to Dawsey! We drove north two hours to pick him up yesterday and he has been wonderful. My first night with him went more smoothly than expected and I’m optimistic about tonight. I’m nervous about going outside in the middle of the night this time of year because I don’t want to surprise a bear or deer (or even a moose), so I’m making efforts to be as loud as possible when we do. Headlamps help!

Dawsey is about 9.5 weeks old. He is pretty happy in his crate (so far), loves his toys, and hasn’t had any bathroom accidents yet. He is going outside about every two hours, so that helps. He is practicing his leash manners and will sit about half of the time that you give him the command. And other than that, he enjoys frolicking through the house and the backyard. He has rooted out several large dust bunnies for me! The cats are keeping their distance; the kids are over the moon.

He is named after Dawsey Adams from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. “Dawsey Adams has the cleanest barns in all of Guernsey” is, as you know, my favorite line about him. Dawsey wasn’t on our shortlist of names but it was the very first name I picked in February. Matthew said no and I let it go. But then on Friday he brought it back up so I just pretended like it was his idea to start with (#1 rule of marriage) and told him that I really loved that name and think that Dawsey is the perfect fit for a border collie. And here we are, with our very own Dawsey.

I forgot to mention on Friday that this week is April vacation for schools in New Hampshire, which means that Colton is home and we’re taking the week off from homeschooling. That takes quite a bit of pressure off of us all and leaves plenty of time for playing. The weather forecast looks promising and you can expect to find us outside most of the week!

I hope to be back on Friday with a big reading round up for you. If I can’t pull that together then I will at least pop in for a brief update. I hope your week goes well and you find time for the things you love. Take good care.
