Wow – my next blog post will be in 2025. What a thing to write! I can’t believe a whole year has gone by and we are on the cusp of another. I’ve sat down several times today to write this post and have been pulled away each time, so let’s see if I can pull all of these fragments together into something coherent.
Christmas came and went last week and we all survived. I managed to not be a total grump on the actual day and that’s a success. It helped that I took a break and went for a walk after breakfast and the presents and before it was time to start preparing the big lunch. And I’ve been doing my best to take it easy while keeping the kids busy over the last week, hence no blog posts since last Monday! I definitely didn’t want to go a whole week without writing anything, so here I am with an update:
My favorite tradition on Christmas happens at night after everyone is in bed: I put away all the food but leave the rest of the mess as it is, then crunch through the mess to the couch and watch The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Netflix. It’s not a Christmas movie at all but I love it just the same. I coax myself along all day by reminding myself that Matthew and I will be spending the evening on Guernsey Island. We’ve done this for at least the last four years and it’s been wonderful. Not only is the scenery spectacular, but I’m always inspired by Juliet’s click-clacking on her typewriter and her little notebooks and fountain pens. And the supporting characters always make me laugh and swoon! I just love the fact that Dawsey Adams has the cleanest barns in all of Guernsey. How wonderful is that?! (Although that little detail may come from the book and not the movie.)
Juliann introduced me to the idea of the up/down photograph that’s in the opening picture. The idea is to snap a picture of your feet and another of the sky to change your perspective as you’re out and about. I’ve been trying it on my walks lately and it’s been a lot of fun. And a change in perspective is exactly what I’m going for in 2025.
I haven’t picked out a word yet and may choose not to in 2025, since I wasn’t particularly inspired by my choice this year (Nest — I don’t think I wrote a single post about it after the initial introduction). But I know I’ll be thinking about perspective and connection next year, so it helps to practice looking at the world around me in a different way.
I know we are all shocked about how quickly 2024 has flown by and many of us are hesitant about 2025, but I hope we can use our connections with each other to help ease the fear and to continue finding joy in the world around us.
I don’t want to rattle on too much today so I’ll stop here. But tell me – how was your holiday week? I hope it was restorative and full of rest. And I hope you have a fantastic start to 2025. See you next year!

I love the up/down photo – very striking! What a fun Christmas night tradition. I’m in that sort of sad state I get into after Christmas. I love it and am very sad to see it go so quickly. But soon enough I will fully pivot into the New Year and into the new pursuits I want to try in 2025. Happy New Year to you and your family!

I love the up/down photo as well! What fun inspiration! We had a very okay holiday… and that is fine by me! Ha! I am sad to bid adieu to my study of time… but a big part of me is eager for my new word which is waiting in the wings! I think our expectations for what a word should “do” hinders us. I hope you pick a word and then see how that begins to show up in your day… maybe a totally out there word… maybe something entirely fun (which is a reminder I need every day… find something fun!) I am sending you the best New Year wishes! XO

I have loved following your study of time and am so excited to see what is next. I think I’ve settled on a word by happenstance which always makes me happy. When I work too hard to find one then it feels forced. But I think it’s made itself obvious in the last few days. I hope you have a Happy New Year!

I think you found the right new boots! I hope so. I took an up/down photo the other day on a walk but have yet to figure out how to put the two together. Technology is not my forte. I’m glad you had an ok Christmas and took time out to watch a movie. I loved that book but have never seen the movie. We had a quiet Christmas and I’ve been a slug this week after but you know what, that is ok. The dust will wait. We Face Timed with both families on the 24th and the 25th and had a lunch out on the 24th with some of my husband’s family.

Yes! I finally settled on the LL Bean Duck boots. They are classic and keep my feet so snug and warm while walking. ❤️
I have been creating the up/down photos by using the free version of the canva app. When it asks what type of media you want to create, choose instagram post. From there, you can upload photos straight from your camera roll and arrange them the way you want them. I think other people use the Layout app, which I do not have but sounds pretty useful!
So glad you had such a lovely Christmas. I think we all turn into slugs during this sliver of time! I hope you have a very happy New Year!

I love your Christmas tradition of watching the movie. We watch the Hobbit movies – one per night – from Christmas Eve to the day after Christmas and I always look forward to that too. I whole heartedly support choosing a word and then letting it just sit with you over the year. I know you will decide on what is best for you but I wonder how the word Walk might be one to accompany you through the year ahead?

I LOVE the Hobbit movies and have considered doing the same. But I know I wouldn’t be able to sustain THREE nights of movies! Some years I barely stay awake for Guernsey!
I think I have decided on a word, but we’ll see what ends up happening!

I love the up/down photo – I think it really makes you feel a bright crisp Winter morning much more than either photo would by itself. Happy New Year!

I have never heard of the up/down photos, although I believe I have seen them, but didn’t know the word for them. I must try this!
I didn’t really do much with my word of the year either and will decide if I will do for for 2025.
We had a very nice Christmas and my heart is full of gratitude. I read somewhere about choosing the time between Christmas and New Years to be a “hush” time. So I have given myself over to being ok with doing little. It has been nice, although I wasn’t as “hushed” as I wanted to be.
I love The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society too; both the book and the movie. I decided it is time to watch the movie again!
Wishing you a Happy New Year! Sending love and blessings!

I love calling this a “hush” time – thank you for sharing that! It reminds us that it’s okay to enjoy some down time. I hope you were able to re-watch Guernsey. It is such a lovely movie (and book)!! Happy New Year, Linda!

I’m glad you survived the holiday week and found time to get out — I’m sure your walks are helping to lift your mood a lot! I love your Christmas evening tradition. Savor that while the kids are young enough to go to bed before you (though I’m now at the stage where my kid will disappear to her room and put herself to bed, so it’s almost the same thing).
The one thing I’m most looking forward to in 2025 is continuing to build friendships and connections with others. I’m not feeling too hopeful about the state of things in the world, but I’m committed to improving and growing the things in my life I can control. Happy New Year, my friend!

Thank you, Sarah! The walks have been great and I’m looking for ways to be more intentional about them in the new year.
I think we share some intentions for 2025. I’m leaning toward Connection for my word – it seems to have bubbled to the surface over the last few days and feels like a natural choice.
I hope you have a wonderful night tonight! And a great start to 2025 🙂
(PS: I just popped a burrito in the microwave for Bryce and without thinking I set the cook time for 20:25. Oops – I have the new year on my brain!!!!)

Your movie tradition sounds lovely (as does Juliann’s watching the Hobbit movies over three nights) … such a nice way to “close” the day. I have been taking the up/down photos this week – I’ve avoided anything “daily” since I stopped the daily photo habit a while ago … but it has been fun to think about framing a part of my day that way. so tbd how I might use it going forward. Happy 2025!!

Yes! I wish I had the dedication to watch the entire Hobbit series this time of year. But the thought overwhelms me! Aren’t the up/down photos fun? They feel valuable even if we’re not sharing them.
Happy New Year, Mary!
