Bookish Chatter | Recently Finished; Indie Bookstore Day

Happy Wednesday, friends. For two weeks in a row, I have no knitting to share so I’m focusing on books again. I have a recent finish, an update on a couple of other (amazing!) books, and a bit about this year’s Indie Bookstore Day. I have my coffee at my side and am so ready to chat with you!

FINISHED THIS WEEK:

We’re still rereading Bryce’s Captain Underpants collection. The Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People was about an alternate reality in which Fred and George have evil twins and Mr. Krupp is actually a good guy who turns into the evil Captain Blunderpants – everything is opposite! But with the help of their bionic hamster, Fred and George save the day. It’s all so bizarre. Bryce has decided to start the ninth one now, The Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers. I’ll let you know how we’re doing with it next week.

I’m still loving Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse. The challenge is that I have no concentration right now! I’ll read a paragraph, enjoy it, but then realize that I’m daydreaming and not paying attention. Which is strange — I am no stranger to zoning out while reading books, but that’s usually a red flag that the book isn’t for me. I don’t think that’s the case with these two. Maybe it’s spring fever and I’m feeling antsy and restless; sitting down and reading just isn’t working for me right now. My reading mojo comes and goes, but I want to read and have a whole stack of fun books waiting for me. I’m not sure what’s so different right now, but I’d like to shake if off soon because something’s not right. To compensate, I’m taking small bites of books and reading for just a few minutes at a time. I’m hoping that will whet my appetite and launch me back into a good reading space.

I’m trying to stay prepared for the moment when my concentration returns, so I’m keeping up with my TBR and ensuring I have what I want/need at the ready. Which is why I was so excited about:

INDIE BOOKSTORE DAY 2022

It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to visit my local Indie for Indie Bookstore Day, but I made sure it happened this year. Armed with May’s TBR and some upcoming reading plans, I gladly slipped into the door at Gibson’s right at opening time, loaded up my arms, and basked in being around the bookish for a few minutes. I wasn’t totally selfish: Taste was for Matthew; Flowers for Sarajevo was for Bronwyn (it was on the We Are Ukraine shelf in the children’s section); Five Little Ducks was for Colton; and not pictured: Big Nate Goes Bananas for Bryce (it is already well-thumbed and was tucked away in his room when I snapped this picture on Sunday morning).

Also in this stack:
* The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher (plan to read in August)
* Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason
* Weather by Jenny Offill (not on my May TBR but I decided it was a necessary purchase)
* Popisho by Leone Ross
* Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT MY MAY READING LIST!! I just need to make a few library ILL requests and hope they become available at the right time. So please, please, please… can I figure out what’s going on with this restlessness? Because I’d really like to get back to my reading plans now, as weIl as some knitting.

I’ve hit this bump in the road in which I can’t even imagine how I managed to knit and read so much in the last few months. I don’t know how I found the time; it is totally perplexing me. Part of the challenge is that I’ve been adding exercise into the mix, which uses up some of my available time. There’s also been lots of time outside and in the gardens, so it makes sense that it’s hard to fit it all in. I just wish I could do everything I wanted to do!! (me and the rest of the world, I know.)

Oh well – I’m trying not to dwell on it too much. At some point, something will shift and I’ll find a new way to do things. And then that won’t work anymore and another shift will be necessary. That’s life!

I plan to be back on Friday with another update. I hope the second half of your week is smooth and you find the time to do what fills your cup. Until then, I’ll just keep filling my coffee cup (and water bottle) to make up the difference in my own life! Stay cozy, friends.

  1. I think most of us go through spells like this. Chalk it up to spring fever? This never-ending pandemic? World events? All of the above? Anyway, I’m a firm believer in putting down a book that doesn’t grab you. Sometimes it’s the book. Sometimes it’s the current mood you’re in. (See “Spring Fever.”) Anyway, the book will be there, waiting for you to return. When the pandemic first began, all I could read were light romances, a genre I never read. Nothing dark for me, which I usually am just fine with. I think we have to go with our inclinations and not worry about it too much. Right now I’m reading the excellent “Slow Horses” by Mick Herron. Loved the television series. Love the book even more. Somehow this tale of washed-out spies is exactly what I need right now. Herron is a sharp and funny writer whose vivid characters pull me along. Highly recommended. Finally, how fun to go to your local book store and come out with an armload of books that includes something for everyone in your family.

    1. Thank you for the kind words! I decided to start listening to The Hobbit, my annual spring reread. It gave me a push to pick up my knitting, and well… what a fun cascade! Thank you for the Slow Horses rec – I haven’t heard of it!

      1. There are a lot of “shoulds” in life. Reading a book that isn’t right for you, whatever the reason, doesn’t belong on the “should” list. Unless, of course, you’re in school. 😉

  2. I am nodding to much of this post, Katie! I have spring fever… and the weather seems to be laughing at me as it stretches on wintry days. Sigh. (Our forecast says 80’s for the weekend and I fear that we are jumping from Winter to Summer here in Pittsburgh)

I have enjoyed lingering in a book… savoring the words on the pages… not wanting it to end. The best moments ever for a reader!

    1. Spring fever + being distracted by the news is not a good combination for me! Or maybe it is and I just have to reframe things a bit. I hope you’re able to enjoy some of the warmth this weekend BUT I hope summer slows down just a tad. Spring is too lovely to skip! And I totally agree about lingering over a book. That’s such a good way to look at my small bites of reading 🙂

    1. Oh yay! I’m excited to start Fresh Water – it seems like such a lovely book. And thank you for the encouragement about The Shell Seekers… so many people say it’s their favorite ever, which is such an exciting prospect. I’m planning to read it in August if you’d like to reread it then 🙂

  4. I think weather has a lot to do with restlessness at times. For me I want to be outside more in the yard with my plants. Love the book list!

  5. Looks like and excellent haul from the bookstore — is there anything better than a fresh stack of books waiting to be read? I’ve had moments like you’re experiencing right now, and they do pass. This week I’m having trouble focusing on anything because of the SCOTUS news, so I am also doing a lot of snippets of reading. I’m sure this too shall pass.

  6. Not heard of indie bookshop day. But am totally thrilled that apparently we have one just opened in town. I just have to find it. Just enjoy your day. I think Captain Underpants is simply the book you need to enjoy at the no.

    1. Maybe it’s just in the US? It’s a fun day to go to a local bookstore and load up! There were all sorts of little incentives to buy lots and lots, which I happily did 🙂 I hope you find your new bookstore soon!! And I think you’re right – Captain Underpants is where my focus should be right now. ❤️

    1. Thanks, Mary! I also heard of Fresh Water from FM, so I’m looking forward to reading it. The cover is divine 🙂 So excited about Popisho – it seems like it’s so much fun. I can’t wait to dive into this stack!

  8. I can relate to so much of this. I think mine is just too many things I want to do at once. When the weather gets warm I see so many things I need to do outside and to the house inside. I guess it’s a wonderful thing that I am able to do all the things if only I can get around to them. Ha!!! My knitting often takes a back seat to everything at this time. I do still enjoy a lot of reading and I just reserved Sorrow and Bliss at my online library. Have a wonderful day and enjoy!!!

  9. Let’s blame Eclipse Season, ha ha! I have also not had a lot of concentration this week, but I chalk mine up to my mother’s move. Now that things are starting to somewhat settle down there, I think my reading mojo will return. Let’s hope – for you too! And YES to never having enough time to do the things you want to do. I can’t wait to get outside in my yard this weekend. Hoping for at least one day to get some much needed weeding done!
