Mandolin Quilt | 3 out of 20

In 2018 I started a handsewing project that makes me squeal every time I see it. The design is called The Mandolin Quilt and I purchased all of the required paper templates from the quilt designer. Along with some luscious Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabric, I quickly stitched together these two blocks:

And then stopped – I felt guilty working on this while knowing that my Scrumptious Hexies quilt was incomplete. But now that it’s pieced and is waiting its turn to be basted and quilted, I can return to this project with a clean conscience!

I ordered a bundle of Liberty fabrics from Duckadilly and got to work. I cut out the shapes, basted, and handsewed this pretty little block over the last couple of weeks:

It could use a quick press, but it’s done! I especially love the bright pink squeezed between the gray and yellow florals. The quilt pattern calls for 20 blocks and my hope is to finish at least one a month. Of course, I will keep you all up to date with my progress!

On Thursday I’ll be sharing this post with Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation, who hosts Needle and Thread Thursday each week. It’s a fun group of sewists if you’re looking for some inspiration. I hope to be back tomorrow to share my recent reads and knitting projects with you all. Have a great Tuesday!

    1. No – your terminology is perfect. There will be hexagons in between to connect all of the blocks together. I think I’m going to make those connecting blocks light gray, which is why I’m choosing darker prints for the outside ring – I think the contrast will be spectacular. Thanks for your kind words!

  1. What fun! I’m really impressed by quilting that’s not in typical block formation. It looks so much harder to me, though I’m sure it’s not. I’ll be interested to see how this quilt comes together!

  2. That IS a beautiful block. I love those vintage fabrics, too. In my thrifty exploration this weekend, I found some quilting block patterns that I hope to explore soon, too. My, but this block you’ve done would look so cool on the back of a jacket, wouldn’t it? Have a great week!
