Unraveled Wednesday – Week 52.5 of 2020

My Travelers Notebook labels this week as number 53 of 2020, but that just feels wrong. So I’m fudging a bit in today’s title – please forgive me!

Kat at As Kat Knits hosts Unraveled Wednesday every week – a gathering of bloggers who share their reading and stitching adventures. Please visit her blog for loads of inspiration! My reading and stitching have both taken the back seat this week because I’ve been focusing on resting, but I do have one finished book and progress on my hexies quilt to share.

Finished Reading This Week:

Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder
I never read this one when I was a little so this was a new treat for me! The “Farmer Boy” is Almanzo, Laura’s husband. He grew up in upstate New York on a farm with 3 siblings. I can’t imagine how bone chillingly cold it would have been to care for their livestock and home without modern heating systems! I loved reading about his mother, who was an avid spinner, weaver, and knitter. I’m so glad that I’ve returned to this series this year – they’ve been perfect reminders to practice gratitude this season.

Stitching This Week:

Here’s the current progress on my english paper piecing quilt. Friends. After sewing on over 400 of these white background squares in the corners, I’m so bored by this last ring of white hexies. But I want to finish this and be happy with it, so I must not abandon this last ring! I haven’t counted, but I think I have about 100 more hexies to sew on and then I’ll have a finished quilt top. That should be motivation enough, right?! And I know I can sew on 100 hexies in a week – I’ve done it many times while working on this quilt. Could I possibly predict a finished quilt top by our first gathering of 2021?? A handsewn quilt top, at that?! Stay tuned!

This is the last Unraveled Wednesday of 2020. A big thank you to Kat who kindly hosts us each week. This is the link up that revitalized my blogging life and I’m so thankful for this practice and to Kat!

I’m planning to be back tomorrow with a quick summary post of my year of making. Nothing fancy – just some pictures that I dug up and a few thoughts about my 2021 stitching goals. I can’t wait to catch up with all of you!

  1. Go Katie Go! That quilt is Amazing and I can only imagine what it will look like all finished! (also, I smiled that the ad at the bottom of the post was a Nespresso machine. WordPress is reading my mind!)

    1. Thank you, Mary!! And I was just googling Nespresso machines earlier this week – aren’t they dreamy? I just feel like they’d complicate my life – but if you get one, then I hope you’ll share your review because I am SO tempted ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. it’s unlikely I’ll be getting one – I had one and gave it to Katie – my coffee habit would be way too expensive a pod at a time! still … I dream about one!

      2. Ha! We had a Keurig for a while but, like you, our coffee habits aren’t conducive to preparing one cup at a time. And yet — we’re thinking about an espresso machine that DOESN’T use pods. They’re crazy expensive, but we have a hefty gift card for Kohls that could cover most of the cost. So we’re constantly imagining the possibilities ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Farmer Boy was always one of my favorites in the series, even though it was a departure from Laura’s story, because it really seemed to capture the daily life on the farm so well. And when I reread it a few years ago with my daughter, I really enjoyed all the knitting and spinning and weaving!

I know you can totally finish that quilt top. You’re so close! When you think about how many hexis you’ve sewn on, even just this year, you have such a small fraction left. You can do it!
