Hobonichi Weeks – Week 27 of 2020

On Monday mornings I spend my blogging time reflecting on the week that just ended. By documenting each day in my Hobonichi Weeks, it’s easy to look back and see what worked and what didn’t the week before. I use my Weeks to track my daily/weekly tasks, the habits I’m working to strengthen, and my writing time. I also write down a few sentences about each day, almost like a mini diary or a One Line a Day notebook. Right now, I’m using my notebook to strengthen my habit of eating at home, rather than stopping for fast food. Please come into my cozy burrow and see how the week went!

My morning pages and step streak have both continued this week and I’m amazed by that. I never would have predicted that, as of today, I would write 92 straight days in my journal. And I’ve said it before, but I’ve often struggled to get even 5,000 steps a day, so it’s still surprising that I’ve consistently logged over 10,000 without really even trying most days (but there has been a night or two in the last month when I’ve walked laps around the house at night before going to bed to keep that streak intact).

Last week I did much better with the snooze button, but I still struggled to squeeze in my evening reflection. That’s okay because I’m sure it will come back around, but it’s something I’m noticing right now. So far it hasn’t been much of a hassle to write the reflection the next morning, but I do worry that I might decide to give up on it one day.

I had another very good week with preparing my own meals. I ate out once and it was totally from a lack of preparation, which I still struggle with. One of the reasons it’s so hard for me to cook dinner is because of our schedule. My husband leaves for work around 4pm and we like to have dinner cooked well before then so that he has time to eat and pack up a second dinner (which he eats around 9pm) before he leaves the house. Complicating the timing is the fact that the bus can’t transport Bug back and forth to treatment right now, so I’m leaving the house at 2:30 and returning at 3:30, which squishes the afternoon cooking time. Without careful planning or my husband throwing something frozen in the oven while I’m gone, then we really struggle to get anything on the table. We’ve been relying on frozen pizzas, chicken nuggets, etc to get us through, but it’s a pain to turn on the oven during the summer! Pastas and sandwiches have become old and Bug is very picky about what he eats. So we’re still exploring other options, excited about noshing on a variety of things from the garden, and looking forward to fall when turning on the oven won’t be an issue.

Because I only ate out once, that’s another $30 into my corgi account! I’m still trying to consider my ultimate goal with this exercise. I think for the the foreseeable future, I want to focus on eating at home and preparing my own meals because that’s my real hurdle. I tallied up last month’s finances over the weekend and discovered that we spent half as much eating out in June than we did in May. While this goal has been mostly about my own health, it has other benefits as well!

I hope your Monday goes as well as possible. I’m planning to be back tomorrow with a post on my mid-year reading stats!

  1. Sounds like you need to start utilizing a crockpot or an instant pot. I personally didn’t like the instant pot I won as a door prize, gave it to my DIL but I love my crockpots. I put the ingredients in the pot in the early morning and it’s ready to go by 1 pm when we eat our noon meal (which is our big meal of the day). A favorite is potatoes, carrots and onions in the bottom with chicken parts on top. Soup is great in the crockpot too. I love is so easy to fix and forget! Have a great week!

    1. We have an Instant Pot and I love it – thanks for the reminder to use it more often! I kept it in mind when writing our grocery list yesterday morning.

I’m now also considering having our big meal finished by noon, as well. All of the meals we cook are big enough for several days of leftovers, so we could have something big for lunch and continue eating on it for dinner OR have a more lunch-like dinner in the evenings (if that makes sense). It might help with our squished afternoons. Thanks for the idea!

      1. Your ideas sound like a good plan since your afternoon is so rushed. With all the fresh vegetables from the garden, stir fry is another easy dish to make. Leftover stir fry is great used with scrambled eggs in the mornings too.

  2. In addition to a crock pot, another idea for getting meals together is doing prep ahead of time for several meals. So chop veggies, cook things like chicken that can be diced and placed in individual containers, or batch-cook things like soup or chili that can be frozen and then defrosting. I know it’s not an easy task (and I don’t have the same challenges but still struggle to come up with ideas for dinners that everyone will eat). But there are also lots of ideas online to help you out!

    1. I’ve had a lot of success with meal prepping in the past, but really struggle with doing that consistently!! But it’s a great reminder – thank you!

    1. My husband and I keep saying that we just need a rotating list of meals to choose from, but neither of has found the gumption to come up with anything, ha! Thanks for the reminder about stir fries and pasta bakes – both are usually very popular around here!

  3. you know, funny that you meantion this, but I just saw “Nadiya’s Time to Eat” on Netflix yesterday. Apparently, she onw the Grat British Bakeoff and now has her own cooking show where she makes all kinds of fast recipes. She has three or four kids, so quick to make is definitely important to her.

In the first episode, she has a self-made “Instant noodles” recipe that looked and sounded great, and also eggroll sandwiches. Maybe your son would find something there? The link to the first episode is here: https://hdclump.com/nadiyas-time-to-eat-episode-1/ Maybe this is something to check out!

HOORAY for the corgi fund!! Corgis are so cute, they always look as if they have NO idea what’s going on but MAN are they ready to party!

    1. I love Nadiya! I haven’t watched any episodes of her show yet, but I did watch the preview and saw that egg roll sandwich that you mentioned. I even made some the other day and they were delicious! You’re right, I should watch more of them. Thank you!

      1. We tried them to, yesterday night and WOW!!! WOW, they are SO GREAT, we are DEFINITELY making them again!! 🙂 I’m glad you liked them, too! 🙂 I had a look at her books, but saw that only ebooks are available right now, so I’ll wait a bit. 🙂

      2. same here – I need them as eye candy, and we don’t like to have the tablet in the kitchen. (and I just found a bookshop that can ship it, I mean, I have the time!! 🙂 WOOT! I ordered it and now I’ll wait! 🙂 )

  4. Dittoing Julia’s recommendation – we’ve seen a few episodes of Nadiya’s show and it’s just as engaging as she was during TGBB. Also, super impressed with your move goal AND the increase in your Corgi fund. Eating out was never a thing for me, but I did enjoy my Starbucks. Giving up that habit these past few months has more than paid for my Zoom account (and honestly, I’m enjoying Zoom a lot more than I enjoyed those Starbucks). Here’s to another solid week!
