Unraveled Wednesday – Week 26 of 2020

Happy Wednesday, friends! Wednesday is my favorite day to publish a blog post because it means that I get to link up with Kat at As Kat Knits. Each week she hosts Unraveled Wednesday – where the best group of bloggers on the web share their reading and stitching projects for the week. Please go visit her blog and the other participants! This week I’m sharing the cozy mysteries I’ve finished, a completed sweater, and two projects in process (including a spoiler for Clue #4 of the Through The Loops Mystery Knit Along).

It’s been another week full of cozy mysteries and I do believe that’s how the entire summer is going to be filled. Please know that I’m quite all right with that!

A Dying Fall is my favorite in the Ruth Galloway series so far. There was a witchy element, which is always something I enjoy. We visit Cathbad’s friend, Pendragon, who lives in an ancient cottage that’s famous for being the home of a witch. It was a picture perfect little place! Meanwhile, an old friend of Ruth’s believes he discovers the bones of King Arthur, who is a hero to white supremacist groups in the area. This discovery leads to, of course, murder!

The Outcast Dead, also a Ruth Galloway mystery, features the exhumation of Mother Hook, a Victorian legend who was believed to murder children in her care. Of course, the real story is much more complicated than that. This had an intricate plot with lots of characters, which made it even more fun.

Thin Air is the sixth in the Shetland series and had another surprise ending for me. This one included a group of friends visiting the islands to attend a wedding. One friend, Eleanor, turns up dead after believing she saw the ghost of a small girl. I loved how this one included local legends and plenty of knitting!

First of all, I finished my Birkin sweater!! What a relief. I started it in March, so it took right around 4 months to complete, which isn’t too bad for me. It turned into quite the slog after I finished the yoke, I’ll be honest. And it’s ill-fitting and lumpy; I probably should have knit one size smaller. But I still love that yoke and I’m looking forward to cuddling into it when the cooler weather rolls around.

Last week I swatched for and started my Mariechen sweater! Friends, it’s a bit complicated. There are two sets of charts going on at once because there’s the lace panel along the front and the seed stitch sections. I had to create little labels to remind myself which sides were the right and left because it’s taking me a bit to adjust to the charts. The wrong side of the project isn’t just purls, so you have to read the charts inside out and backwards when working your way back to the front. Holy moly – this is a project that will keep me from focusing on the world around me!

This sweater is knit in DK weight, which I’ve never done before. All of my previous sweaters have been knitted in fingering weight, so I’m looking forward to seeing how quickly this bulks up.

Clue 4 of the TTL MKAL was released on Monday! I was tired and confused when I started this week, so I made some errors that resulted in a lot of unraveling. Once I got over my initial confusion (all of my own making – nothing to do with the pattern or instructions), it was smooth sailing. This thing has gotten big all of a sudden! And there’s so much texture – I can’t wait until the next clue is released!
