Reading & Knitting Round Up – Week 8 of 2020

We’re in the middle of the 8th week of 2020! Yesterday we got a fresh coating of snow and it’s perfect for snuggling on the couch and reading. I hope your reading and crafting plans are going well and, like me, you’re on a great adventure!

Reading

Finished This Week:

Lethal White is the 4th novel in the Cormoran Strike series. I just love these and am so happy to be caught up and ready for the fifth when it’s published. This was a complex mystery with a lot of characters to keep straight, especially since the reader had to juggle them through 600+ pages, but the storyline between Cormoran and Robin keeps things going. I love walking through the streets of London with Cormoran! Galbraith (Rowling) has such a way with writing series – she can write long story arches like no other. And I enjoyed the way she slowly divulged the resolution to this – we knew that the detectives had solved the mystery and that we were given all of the clues, but the final reveal wasn’t until the very end. And could we have gotten a peak at the setting of the 5th novel at the very end of this one? I think so!

Currently Reading:

I’m delighted to have cracked open Nemesis. In high school, I enjoyed reading Agatha Christie in the winter and Mary Higgins Clark in the summer. I can no longer claim to be a Higgins Clark fan, but I think I’m still a Christie fan! What a delightful novel to curl up with on the dark days of winter and a hot cup of tea. So far, this one has ticked several of my cozy boxes: Miss Marple has done quite a bit of knitting, speculated about wool, studied her newspapers with a keen eye, and gone on about the state of her garden. I’d be quite happy to grow up to be Miss Marple!

I checked out Anne of Avonlea over the weekend in anticipation of being able to start it this week. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. A peek at my Overdrive holds this morning showed me that A Long Petal of the Sea is listed as available soon – so this is going to be worked into the plan a bit earlier than expected! And Bitter Orange is listed as in at my public library and I hope it will stay there until this weekend. I’m still trying not to hoard library books, but it’s so tempting to scoop them all up at once! How do all of you librarians avoid that? It seems like such an occupational hazard. And my sweet and pushy friend Jordy insists that I read Operating Instructions, so I’m planning to start that soon as well! I’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while and now is the time to take the plunge.

Knitting

I’ve done a bit more knitting this week! The first sleeve is done and I’m on to the second. After last week’s post, I managed to kick my knitting up a gear and finished that sleeve in just two days. And then my motivation waned and here I am with a nub of a second sleeve despite having plenty of opportunities for progress. Ahh — I’ll get there, I’m sure. My hope is that I will finish the sleeve, knit the collar, wash, and block this sweater by our meeting next week. Perhaps even a modeled picture by then? Wish me luck!
