Goals for 2020

When thinking of goals for 2020, I wanted them to be simple. Much like my word of the year – to be present – I wanted something easy to fall back on. In the past, I’ve made really specific goals such as “read 12 nonfiction books,” and “write 3 blog posts a week.” Those are SMART goals – they are easily measurable and you know when and if you achieve them. But inevitably, I fall off track and some goals no longer make sense. So 2020 is going to be simple and will gently guide me towards the type of reader and blogger I want to be.

Goals

I’m going to stick with the 50 book challenge on Goodreads — I’m likely to read more, but I don’t want to focus on the total number of books that I finish. Sometimes, despite my best efforts, I find myself avoiding books because I think they’ll take me forever and will slow me down. I don’t want that pressure – I want to feel comfortable taking on the hard stuff! So I’m sticking with 50.

I’d like to write something on Goodreads for every book that I finish. Not a whole book report or a whip-smart review, but just a couple of sentences that encapsulate what I felt about the book. Sometimes that’s really hard for me to do because I quickly move on to the next book without collecting my thoughts about what I’ve just finished. I’d like to slow down and take a bit of time to wrap it up more formally.

For my blog, I’d like to include more of my own pictures. I rely heavily on the free pictures from Canva and Pexels because they can quickly add that cozy element to my blog that I love so much. And while I do my best to make my life cozy, it’s not always picturesque. I’m going to try to snap more photos in 2020 and use those for my banner photos to personalize my blog even more.

And… no buying books! I’m serious about this. I’ll buy books for my children but not for myself. Two caveats: I will buy books by Wendell Berry and if Kate Morton happens to publish something. Other than that – no buying! I actually think this will be quite easy for me in 2020. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t actually like owning books (gasp! shock! horror! I know). I really like borrowing them from the library and releasing them back into the wild to be read again. I reread so few books that it doesn’t seem necessary to actually own any of them.

That’s it! Easy, right? Have you been thinking about your goals for the new year? Have you written a post on them? Please let me know in the comments!

  1. I am thinking hard about my reading and where I want to go next year! I love your idea of writing down a sentence of two about your thoughts on a book! I am very bad at writing anything down on Goodreads.

    1. Good luck with your goals, Kat. I find it so hard to find the balance between being realistic and too lofty. I can’t wait to see what you come up with 🙂

  2. Good goals. The buying books one would be hard for me – I don’t buy a lot of books, because I’m at the library every day. But I do buy probably around 8-12 books a year, some of them used. I keep only the ones i know I’ll reread in that ever elusive someday.

    1. I go through periods where I buy books haphazardly and then won’t buy anything. I just want to feel consistent and I know that I can save a lot of money if I just always use the library! Especially since I rarely read anything off of my own shelves anyway. I love your strategy of only keeping the ones you know you’ll reread!

  3. Love your goals. We are in a season of moving and transition so I think the no buying books is a great goal. However, I’m not sure I could get my husband on board with that one. 🙂 I am loving our small town public library. We visit every Monday so getting more reading in is 100% one of my goals for 2020.

    1. Thanks! It’s such a pain to move a ton of books! Public libraries are the best, aren’t they? Sometimes I just want to move into mine. Good luck reading more next year!

  4. Most of my goals will be to continue with my health and wellness habit making but I have been thinking about my reading life. I am less than thrilled with it currently and I want to be more intentional. In the last few months I have bought three books because the library queue was so long and then my hold arrived within a few days or purchasing – ugh! So waiting a bit longer before purchasing is on my list. Thanks for a thoughtful post.

    1. Library holds can be so frustrating! Good luck finding ways to get more out of your reading life. I look forward to following your blog and seeing what helps in the new year!

  5. I buy and borrow – more of the former, primarily because it’s convenient (and I’m wooed by display?). This is primarily for new, best seller types. The older titles, I borrow. When I’ve finished a bought title, I’ll share among friends and family or donate to the Free LIttle Libraries or the Public Library’s Friends group for their book sales.
    Cheers~

    1. It’s so great to pass good books around. When I pass something on to someone, they’re always genuinely surprised when I don’t want it back. Pass it on, I say!
