It’s Tuesday! Thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl for hosting this weekly link-up. This week’s topic is probably the easiest yet: books that I meant to read last year but didn’t get to!
2018 was a slow reading year for me, so there were a ton of books that I would have loved to tackle. The list below includes some books NOT published in 2018 because I can never stay ahead of the curve!
I don’t read enough by Native American authors (maybe… never?) and really wanted to experience this one. I was even able to snag it from the library, but wasn’t able to get to it before returning it. 2019, perhaps?
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Another that got returned to the library without reading. And Thomas has another book that will be published in February – On the Come Up – that I’d like to check out as well.
Dr. Gay is brilliant and I want to read everything she’s written. This is on my shelf and I can pick it up anytime. Why haven’t I?
The Romanov Sisters by Helen Rappaport
Another that’s also on my shelf. I was certain I was going to read it last summer given that it was the 100th anniversary of their deaths, but I didn’t!
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
Another that I waited FOREVER for and then returned to the library unread. I’ve now bought a copy and it’s on my shelf. I WILL read this in 2019!
The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne
This was the 2017 Book of the Year for the Book of the Month Club. I’ve never read anything by John Boyne, but really wanted to see what the fuss was about. I have a physical copy on my shelf, but it’s a beast and I’m not sure I’ll actually get to it in 2019.
This won the Bailey’s Prize in 2016, was a Barack Obama pick in 2017, and we even picked it for my book club at work (after I nominated it!!) and I still haven’t read it. It’s been on my shelf since the winter of 2016 (after I ordered it from the UK because it wasn’t printed in the States yet) — 2019 – here I come!!
Can you believe that the last book that I read by Lauren Groff was The Monsters of Templeton in 2008??? I thought 2018 would be the year to change that, but…. not quite.
The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
Another that just seems to be on everyone’s list.
This is on my Kindle and is what the PBS show is based on. I love everything about the British royal families and would love to read this!
Okay — where should I start??!!

Great list! I still need to read The Hate U Give, too, and I’ve heard so many good things about There There that I need to give it a try – I don’t read enough from First Nations authors. Eleanor Oliphant and The Power are both books I need to get to as well, and I was lucky enough to see a talk with Helen Rappaport last year and she was great so I need to check out some her work. I hope you enjoy all of these!

I’m a pro at returning books to the library unread…and then checking them out again eventually. I am reading The Hate U Give right now and am enjoying it. Hope to watch the movie soon.

I always feel silly checking them out again… but it’s not like the librarians can remember everything you’ve ever gotten there, right?? I’m glad to see that so many people are loving THUG!

Eleanor Oliphant was maybe my favorite book last year. Hunger, There There, and THUG are also very good. The John Boyne is on my list for this year!

‘Eleanor Oliphant’ is a personal favourite. I hope you get to read it soon! I should have added ‘The Hate U Give’ to my list because I started it last year but never got around to finishing it. 😅

I feel like I’ve been meaning to read ‘There There,’ ‘Hunger,’ and ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ for ages too! I also have a personal copy of ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ and have never gotten around to reading it. There are just so many books out there I want to read and I tend to gravitate towards the shorter ones.
