The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness

The Book of Life was the final installment of the All Souls Trilogy, which follows Diana and Matthew back to present day to finally put their hands on that dang Ashmole book. They travel the world – they spend time in Diana’s ancestral home in the States, they visit England, and stay in Paris. They live in a glamorous townhouse for a while, which made me want to completely redecorate my home.

But to be honest, that’s about all that I remember about this book! I remember enjoying it, so it was a fun adventure, but this series isn’t exactly high literature that sticks with you. And not everything has to be! This was a great book to read in October given that it was crawling with witches, vampires, and daemons – so fun!

I gobbled this one up in just a few days, which means that I definitely enjoyed it more than the second installment in the trilogy, which took me over a year to finish. I always feel a little uncomfortable reading about the lives of the filthy rich (which Matthew lives), but I gave myself complete permission to immerse myself into that world and pretend that I have big, fancy houses all of the world and am a scientific and historical genius that can solve the mysteries of life. See? Fun, isn’t it?

Sorry that this is so short – but I don’t think there’s a lot to write about here. I’m glad that I finished the series and I ended up enjoying it as a fun romance and adventure. This is definitely an atmospheric book, so they are probably best read in the Fall when you are looking for some witch-y goodness for your Halloween itch.
