Today marks the middle of August – and how did THAT happen?! This is one of those weird days when two of my favorite linkups happen at the same time… this post is for the Modern Mrs. Darcy’s monthly QuickLit link up, but you can see my Top Ten Tuesday post here.
These last few months have been full of reading for me! For a full list and links to my thoughts, please check out this page. But here’s a quick update on what’s on my nightstand right now:
Laurel is an actress who grew up in the English countryside. One perfect summer day in the 1960s, she sees her mother, Dolly, kill a man. Now that her mother is dying herself, Laurel tries to remember more about that day and what actually happened.
In true Kate Morton style, we flash back to the 40s and learn about Dolly’s life before and during the war. She is living in London during The Blitz and experiences the daily bombings and all of the tragedies those entail. But she’s also wanting to have a chance that her own mother didn’t have: to live a life that’s all her own.
Kate Morton is the best at writing about family secrets and the twisted paths those can take people. The settings only make her novels more cozy: usually some old farmhouse in an English village! This one is a chunkster – but I think you’ll fly right through it.
My first thought was that this was Harry Potter on steroids, but it also looks like there might be a bit of The Hunger Games thrown in there. It doesn’t hurt that I’m listening to this on audio and it’s narrated by Jim Dale, so that immediately makes it magical.
I haven’t gotten very far in this one, maybe an hour or so? But two young magicians have been chosen to train with older magicians in a sort of game. It sounds like this might be a game of life and death? Again – I haven’t gotten too far and I don’t have a lot of the specifics nailed down yet, but this has been so enjoyable so far. I love books about magic and there’s a lot in this one!

The Secret Keeper is my absolute favorite Kate Morton novel! I don’t think I’ve heard of The Night Circus either — will have to check it out 🙂

I felt the same way about The Night Circus. Though I started it in book form, I quickly had to download the Audible version so that I could listen on my commute…and pick the book back up in the evenings. It is now one of my favorites of all time. I hope you enjoy it!

Ooh, we’re both listening to Jim Dale books! He’s so awesome. I feel like the only person in the world who hasn’t read The Night Circus. Many have recommended it to me. I also haven’t read Kate Morton yet, but I want to! There’s not enough time!

I think that Kate Morton might be my favorite overall author – I’ve loved all of her books! I hope you’re able to get to one soon because they’re all amazing!

Oooo I think The Night Circus would be so interesting on audio! I read it in the traditional way, and it was one of my favorites. I can’t believe it took me so long to find it, either.

It is excellent on audio! But I do have to say that it’s a bit difficult to keep up with all of the characters and time changes this way. Maybe it would be easier for you since you’ve already read it?

Both of those books are two of my favorites!!! The Night Circus is hands down one of my all time favorites, I love that it’s fantasy but you don’t have to buy into a completely alternate reality, it’s more like living in an elaborate dream. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I need to re-read it actually!
