Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Books On My Spring TBR

I was so happy to see that The Broke and the Bookish’s Top 10 Tuesday has returned!  If you’re unfamiliar, the writers over there offer a weekly topic and lots of book bloggers link up with their posts.  This week’s topic is the Top 10 Books on My Spring TBR.
I predict that my spring is going to be full of Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction nominees.  If you’re visiting from The Broke and the Bookish, you should know that I am aiming to read all sixteen nominated novels!  But there are a couple of other books that I’m going to work through as well, so let’s jump in!
  1. The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman – this is our next read for my book club at work.
  2. Lincoln in the Bardo: A Novel  by George Saunders – I have been on the overdrive waitlist for this for a while now, but I should be able to get it in the next couple of weeks.  As I’m writing this, I’m currently #7 on 4 copies – so my time is coming!
  3. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert – I’ve been on the overdrive waiting list for this one since the first week of January and I’m finally #2!  But I have a feeling that I’m going to end up buying it – I love having books on creative lives as inspiration!
  4. Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics) by Charlotte Bronte – I have been rereading for a bit now, but hope to have it finished at some point this spring.

Okay – on to the first books that I’m planning to tackle for the Baileys Prize
  1. Barkskins: A Novel by Annie Proulx – which I’m actually already reading!  This was the only nominee that my public library had, so I didn’t have to waffle over which book to start with.
  2. The Lonely Hearts Hotel: A Novel by Heather O’Neill – another book that I’ve had on my overdrive hold list since mid-February.  I’m #4 on 1 copy, so I should definitely be able to get to this one before the prize is announced!
  3. The Power by Naomi Alderman – Dystopian science fiction?  I’ll take it!
  4. Little Deaths: A Novel by Emma Flint – about two young children found dead and their mother is blamed for their murder.  As a mother of two young children, I’m not sure how I’m going to handle this one, but I’m going to check it out.
  5. The Woman Next Door: A Novel by Yewande Omotoso – two women that are neighbors, of different races, and are sworn enemies.  I’m glad that I get to be a fly on the wall!
  6. Midwinter by Fiona Melrose – Suffolk farmers grappling with painful memories and family.  I love big, messy family stories!

Those are only the first five books that I’m tackling – there are eleven more nominees on my spring TBR.  Have you read any of the nominated books?  I hadn’t read any.  And other than Margaret Atwood (who is my hero), all of the writers are new to me!

  1. I’ve just started a chunkster too – Paul Auster’s 4321. I’ve been eyeing off Barkskins, but just not sure if I can go there – so I’ll be watching out for your review later 🙂

    Good luck with your Bailey’s challenge. In Australia we have the Stella Prize which is all Aust women writers – my aim is to read as many of them as possible.

    1. I’m really enjoying Barkskins. I’m moving through it a little more slowly than I was hoping, but the story has been really good so far. I’ll look forward to reading your review of Auster — these big books are such an investment of time but they usually pay off! I hadn’t heard of the Stella Prize; I’ll have to check it out! Good luck with your challenge too 🙂

  11. Yea, you might want to get Big Magic. However, I suggest reading the first and second chapters first. I liked it, but some readers thought it too weird because of how Gilbert talks about inspiration.
